Ripp,

How were your usb cameras holding up in the sun? That is one of the concerns I have had if I did a front facing camera mounted behind the rear view mirror.. I'd think it would get completely obliterated by the sun?

They were holding up pretty well.  Better than I thought they would be.  Look, directly or close to direct sunlight, not even the human eye can cope with that, which has the best lens one could possibly want for the conditions.  They did worse at night, they try to expose for the upcoming headlight, the black levels get way too high and the picture is gone, you're left with a perfectly exposed light source in the complete dark.

They were right behind that film that protects the rearviewmirror, and also they were focused straight ahead up to 40ft, I tried to minimize the amount of sky in the picture: never more than 40% or the auto exposure system will expose for the sky, and you'll barely see what matter: cars, and their licence plates!

Hope this helps, sorry for the delay.

Sorry - I meant more from an environmental condition perspective. Eg, leaving your radar detector in the window can yield some pretty serious damage to it over time. I was expecting the same for the USB camera. You did answer some other questions though that I hadn't really considered yet. Smiley

Oh, my fault.

Yes, I didn't drive that much with them, so I can't say.  People on other forums drive with el cheapo $5.00 ebay specials and they never heard about them failing because of the car environment - other than discoloration, the internals apparently are simple enough to stand the heat.  But who knows, maybe the more expensive ones have more parts/boards/components that are more sensitive.  I'd expect two years of service at least, but that's a guess worth .02c at most!

Some videos I haven't posted before.  I was planning to do a better presentation of the features, but that's all I got left.

First, the demostration of the Google Earth working in the car:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/nAMVR_scG28&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/nAMVR_scG28&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0</a>

It's a fairly straightforward plug in for the car front end.  It zooms in and out according to speed, so that you can see some more detail when you're stopped.  You can also zoom in and out and move around the map by using the touch screen and/or the regular google controls.  I also had my 3D contoller mapped to control the G.Earth features.  I should have picked a route with more turns and/or interstate exits, etc. that's why I've never posted.

The second (highly distracting video) is supposed to show the touchscreen working under bright sunlight.  It was Summer, noon, and it was still fairly visible.  Of course, it's much better in my computer, on youtube it's supercrappy.

The google earth thing is pretty sweet. Your camera shooting is almost as bad as mine, though! Wink

That's another reason I haven't posted this before.  I should have used a tripod somehow mounted in the back seat with maybe bean bags...it's nauseating as it is, it's like that movie, Cloverfield...LOL
