2009 BMW 335d - Short Take Road Test

It’s no secret that we love BMWs. Indeed, browse any auto-enthusiast message board and you’ll no doubt read about the piles of fresh $100 bills that arrive in our office every month from some German dude named Bayerische M. Werke. The reality, though, is that bribes are unnecessary, especially in the case of the sensational 3-series. It’s the benchmark vehicle for a benchmark company, and a car we’ve called “terrific,” “magical,” “world-class,” “definitive,” and “a wing-footed god.” (Although even we admit that that last one might be a bit much.)

Today, we add a new descriptor to our 3-series vocabulary: torquey sumbitch. For 2009, BMW has finally seen fit to offer a compression-ignition 3 in the U.S., gifting upon us its twin-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine, which pumps out a goodly sum of power (265 hp @ 4200 rpm) and a wicked level of twist (425 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm). Compared to a regular 335i sedan, which boasts 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, the 335d has 42 percent more torque while sacrificing just 9 percent in the power department. That, friends, is the sort of compromise we can live with.

Wow very nice....torque can help a car/truck out tremendously where it lacks horsepower!

I wouldnt call 265hp lack of power, but yes, lots of torque is a very nice compensation

lol...yeah I wouldn't say 265hp is lack by no means...I was referring to hp vs. tq in general and how tq can help when hp is lower. 35hp difference can be felt though in comparison to the non-diesel.

56K?   Premium package is what?  IIRC is leather seats (not BMW's infamous leatherette) and door trim, compass and homelink audo dimming on the rearview mirror and what, lumbar support?  This should come standard anyway.  How much is a previous gen. M3 again?

If the 3 series were at least as big and roomy as the G35, I would think...no, probably not either.  But the car is about the size of a Nissan Versa, only lower.

The price could get a bit crazy when loaded up to the neck
My 335i was 52K MSRP, (ED price i paid 46K) and it's pretty much everything to have on the car
There are useless options you dont need, but the test car came with them nevertheless

Loaded 335d would be about 52-53K
ED should be around 6K less
Now it's not such a bad deal is it?

Keep in mind, true cost to own should be very similar to G37

Dont look at just MSRP

Couple of points that I can't get off of my mind:

Hummm, new model year BMW 4k off? 

G37? No hybrid there, or diesel.  Also, at this price, one should be looking at GS hybrid, at least I would.

What do you mean by "loaded up to the neck" and "options you don't need"?  I think BMW's premium and sport packages have pretty much what comes standard in most competitors, like Infinitis and Lexus, right?   I mean the latter come with heat and cooled seats...You don't "need" that, but then again...what do you mean exactly?

I mean, leather is optional?  WTF?  It's not that the 335d will be a track day car where luxury is optional, so I think leather should come standard, as auto dim mirrors, and homelink, don't you think?  This is pretty basic.  I could see radar cruise control as optionals, but not what's in the "premium" package.

If we're talking about cooled and heated cup holders, then yes, I'd say you don't need these and I would get your point.  But leather trim shouldn't not even be an option, not to mention the "fat" fancy rearview mirrors...My wife once steped on an 07 new model Acura MDX, saw that cheap rental rearview mirror (the audo dim was a $200.00 option) and she gave up on the car on the spot, and I could see the point.  Those things you usually don't worry about anymore, makes you think what else you forgot to look now that may surprise you in the future.  Grin
