I just got a FREE CAR!
« on: May 19, 2009, 08:49:09 AM »

So my old boss/close family friend called me up today and gave me the news that he was looking for a "family member" that would like to get some use out of his old E12 530.  It has been a partial storage unit for the last few years at my cousin's/his daughters house and the car is mine if I want it.  HELL YEAH!  I have been wanting to grab that thing and convert it into a track car for years!  Lucky for me my boss is a pack rat and has a decent amount of parts for it and even receipts for the borla exhaust and bilstein shocks that carry a lifetime warranty.  I won't be able to do much with it until I move but that looks like its going to happen in September anyway.  Its slightly rough around the edges from his daughter driving it in college but my boss is the original owner and every one of his kids learned how to drive on it so he really wants to keep it within the family if he can.  I also got to ride in an e30 318 with nothing but slicks and worn out suspension and if this thing can do 3/4 what that thing could do, its going to be a FUN track car.  My boss did do a fair amount of work to it, the bilsteins are fully adjustable, its got alpina headers shifter and steering wheel, custom sun roof (which will need to be removed or replaced).  I'll get some better pictures of it when I'm in asheville in a couple weeks but now I'm really going to be itching to move.  Ugh...

Very cool.

What's the deal with the move? Uplifting the business elsewhere?

OK. You from the south? I'm trying to figure out if he (your boss) is actually related to you or not!...  Smiley

Well,
As far as the business goes I have decided to head down another path.  I'm now an assistant photographer for an editorial photographer based out of Jersey city and have changed gears a bit and will be pursuing my photography career first, before starting a business doing it.  All in all I'm just not sold on big city life.  I miss having normal living expenses with a CAR and a GARAGE, a YARD etc.  The long cold winter didn't help either.  Now that its warming up, who knows, I could fall in love with New York but unless I land some amazing job that offers good money I don't see me staying past September.  My girlfriend and I both have connections in Austin and we have heard great things about the city so that is probably at the top of our list at this point in time.  We have yet to visit but I have heard good things from a lot of people.  Not to mention I could get a 5 bedroom house for what I'm paying for a small apt here.

I'm not really related to my boss but my 2nd step-cousin (his father married my mom's 1st cousin... I think thats correct..??) married my boss's oldest daughter.  So technically I am related but not really.  That said, I am closer to them than I am on paper.  I basically lived with them for more than 5 summers growing up and see them on Christmas etc.  I'm also going to be flying into town for his son's wedding next weekend.  I can't wait to get there and get the car running!  He said it might need new fuel lines (which is pretty common for a car that age, I already found a writeup on how to replace them) but nobody has started it in over a year so who knows what its going to need...  Lucky me I will have almost a week to get it running and do its initial clean out/gutting.  I think there is even a sub box under the rear seat that will most likely need to be gutted.  Should be FUN!  haha...

I found one more pic of the rear...

From the rear too it looks it was taken care of.  Just the front spoiler is rough around the edges, a bit like some IS-Fs I've seen...no biggie.

Ok, for the price of registration... which is determined by the state and considering these things tend to go for less than $1,000 should be next to nothing.  I'm also hoping to register it as a classic so insurance will be Uber-cheap.  The body has been well taken care of, except for the aftermarket sunroof needs some help but all things considered its in great shape.  I talked to my cousin yesterday and he said that every time he needs to use it, its fired right up.  MAN I can't wait to get down there!  Lucky me there is a good following of these cars and there is a TON of writeups/info.  The big question is to keep it a street car or all-out track car...?  Given my fondness of taking photos I'm leaning towards keeping it a street car and doing a full restoration.  Only time will tell...

would be sweet to keep it a street car, full restoration... there is a race version of this model?  from S.africa or something...

sweet ride... I have been getting into the classic car shows and auto trader on HD Theatre channel on TV, not sure where they show this... but there is some sweet stuff...

what a sweet project to start up with - minimal start up costs...
