2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L Track Edition
« on: December 01, 2009, 06:09:52 PM »

OK, So today was a test driving day.  I went out and took the Genesis Coupe (GC) for a test drive along with a CTS and a SRX Caddy.  Here's my impression.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L Track
I REALLY wanted to like this car.  I remember when I bought the M45s it was largely because I saw one and said "Hey, that's snazzy looking" and then was suprised by how much I enjoyed it.  So, I was hoping for the same results here.  I read that it beat the G series Infiniti and a couple of online video reviews basically raved about it.  Well here goes.
Body: I think it's gorgeous.  Sort of a cross between the G series coupe and a late model Celica.  Swoopy lines and it has this cool window line at the backseat that dips a little.  Sure the wing is ricey but it serves a purpose.  When I saw one in NJ this past summer I was like "Wow that looks much better in person.  That's actually pretty cool"  OK the grill is awful but I saw some nice aftermarket ones that interestingly enough apes the grill from Infiniti.  Plenty of so so plastic on the outside though.  Bottom front is black plastic as is the rear diffuser area (I refuse to actually call that a diffuser).
Interior: Ugh, this is terrible.  I know it's functional and might have all the bells and whistles but it's like plastic land.  Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is plastic.  There's one little patch of leather on the doors but the rest is all plastic.  It fits well but to call it "Spartan" would be an overstatement.  It just feels cheap.  The headliner is cheap fabric, the pieces are just waiting to be scuffed black plastic.  Even the knobs felt cheap.  The NAV seemed two generations old.  Which brings me to . .  the backseat.  Now, coming from an M6 and a SC430 Lexus once upon a time, I know small back seats.  These are not small.  They fit quite handily in the leg section and an adult could ride back there for an hour or so.  EXCEPT they really can't because of the headroom.  I'm 5'7.5" on the button.  That's short in America (avg height of males is 5'10").  My head actually hits the glass or the roof just sitting up normally.  If you put an adult back there and hit a bump?  BANG they'd be screaming.  And I don't mean a big ole pot hole, I mean any bump.  Heck, I think even kids with their raised seat they sit on would smack their heads once in awhile.  The seats were very comfortable.  Very good lateral support but then they dropped the ball here too.  The passenger seat? No electric adjustment available.  The driver?  it's like 4 way adjustment only.  It's a shame because the general shape of the interior makes it seem like it could be very nice with the right parts.  Then they just dumped crap inside.
Electrical: Radio/Stereo sucks.  No two ways about it, it's lame.  Sounds terrible and it seemed as if it was from a car 2 or 3 generations ago.  The instrumentation is nothing to write home about.  It's very basic.  The dials don't sweep once or have any cool colors or anything.  Just blah.
Engine: Now this is where it should start to shine.  But it doesn't.  It has plenty of get up and go.  In fact, it went pretty quick off the line with a very nice ROWR exhaust.  But it didn't feel like it was Set in there very well.  You know that driving feel of the BMW or Infiniti that makes it feel like one unit?  Here, not so much.  It feels like an engine inside a frame.  Two separate units.  The car itself shook a little when you punched it. Even though I know it's not, it felt too fast.  Like the control wasn't there.  Speaking of control, here was the deal killer part for me:
Handling:  What in the heck is this?  Sure it felt sticky to the ground.  But it once again felt like you were throwing a very fast but cheap car around.  Definately NOT solid but more like a rattly old car that had a great engine.  Then I hit the brakes.  Look I wasn't going very fast.  Maybe 40 and I didn't slam on the brakes but merely pressed down to see the stopping power.  Yes, it stopped but the antilock brakes kicked in (and man do they grind and pop) and the car actually slid it's tail a tiny bit.  WTF.  Seriously guys I was NOT going fast and was NOT hitting the brakes hard.  In fact, I could see myself hitting the brakes at that speed all the time.  Can you imagine the tail slipping out and abs going "Crunch Grind Grind" on a relatively quick stop?  Holy crap, it was so bad, I'd put it in the Dangerous category.
Ride: Terrible.  I could feel every bump which doesn't bother me so much but it felt like it was through a 1990 Toyota Corolla.  You know the kind of rickety car where you can hear the road and feel it through the frame?  Same feel.
Fit and Finish: On the one hand it seemed pretty good.  The seems were tight but the rattly feel I imagine would get worse over time pretty quickly (it has to be all that plastic).  For example, there was a buzzing going on.  I thought it was the seatbelt in the rear seats but it turned out to be something in the headliner.  The sales guy held onto it to stop it.  Also there was a very noticable vibration at 2700 rpm that came through the pedal and the whole car vibrated.  Sales guy said "hmm, that's not right, I'll talk to the service guys about that".  That's not a good sign.
Overall, I don't know how anyone puts this against a G37s.  It might go as fast but the minuses here are huge.  This is clearly not in the same league in my opinion.  I know it's like 10k less but it sure feels like it's 10k less.  Also I think that 10k comes down a ton if you take into account depreciation.  I have to imagine these things will drop like a rock in a few years.  Edmunds has depreciation of 7500 in year one.  I think that feels about right here.  In any event, the search goes on!

P.S. Oh I forgot to mention the transmission.  It's hard.  It doesn't smoothly go between gears and the car will clunk between gears.  I think you need a manual in this car.  The paddy shifts are useless.  They are small and the spring isn't right so it doesn't have a sufficient definitive feel like you are switching gears.  No blip on throttle or anything like that either.  It's basically an automatic that happens to have these paddle things but you wouldn't use them.  Oh and coming back into the dealer lot?  I came in super slow and at an angle to the driveway and still there was this horrible scraping sound.  I don't think it was the car though.  I think it was the suspension or something because there's no way I scraped the bottom.  I know this because I took the exact same line as I took on the R8 on the way in and I'm quite certain it's not as low as the R8.

Nah.  Didn't feel like taking out a Ferrari today, they are buried in the garage behind the others.  I took the R8.  Strange thing was, the showroom floor was a Aston Vatage (circa 2006) and two Ferrari 360's (circa 2002).  NO Hyundai's.  Apparently they do a "highline" business as well.  Guy was gushing about the 360 and in my head I'm thinking "uh yeah you clearly don't know about this cars many faults that were fixed in the 430".  He was also shady and making crap up "Yeah the 360 Ferrari is amazing and has four wheel steering capability so all four wheels can turn on a track".  (uh, no.) or "this car was actually one of the official pace cars in Monacco" (uh, no.)  or my personal faborite "Wow that's a cool car (referencing the R8 V10), I bet it would probably even keep up with one of our Ferraris" (uh yeahh, maybe even I don't know, pass it if the Ferrari got struck by lightening or something)

Nice write up trin.  You had me at "just feels cheap".  When I sat in it at our auto show that was the first thing that came to mind.
