BMW Gran Coupe Concept
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:53:25 PM »

This is going to be one of the siblings in 6-series lineup
I've heard it's been appoved for production, so its future is real

I'm personally very excited, as it adds another option for me in my future purchase
Finally, some good design by BMW...

Coupe?  LOL  I like this sedan.  Looks too big to be a coupe, even if it had two doors, since it has four, it must be a joke there.

Maybe they should end the 5 series and stick to this one.  Much better looking.
I liked the front end, very wide and mean looking.  But I bet somebody is going to say: catfish!

Not sure about the huge gaping holes under the headlights though...And the grille looks a bit Buick to me, is it the chrome or am I way off?

I can't comment on the rear, because I can't see much.  I think my display needs to be recalibrated!

There are bunch of cars these days which have 4 doors and still called coupe
I dont see the issue here
It's not about number of doors, it's the shape

Says who?  The newest marketing hype or the concept proper definition as stated in numerous sources, based on long standing tradition?

Well, they're wrong (Rover and VW):

Quote
Main Entry: cou·pé
Variant(s): or coupe \kü-ˈpā, 2 often ˈküp\
Function: noun
Etymology: French coupé, from past participle of couper to cut, strike
Date: 1825

1 : a four-wheeled closed horse-drawn carriage for two persons inside with an outside seat for the driver in front
2 usually coupe : a 2-door automobile often seating only two persons; also : one with a tight-spaced rear sea

(webster)

Quote
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) distinguishes a coupé from a sedan (saloon) primarily by interior volume; SAE standard J1100 defines a coupé as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 cubic feet (0.93 cubic meters) of rear interior volume. A car with a greater interior volume is technically a two-door sedan, not a coupé, even if it has only two doors. By this standard, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, and Mercedes-Benz CL-Class coupés are all two-door sedans.

That's why I said in my first post above that even it this was a two door, it should be called a sedan, because of it's size.

And this is the marketing hype:

Quote
Today coupé has become more of a marketing  term for automotive manufacturers, than a fact of the vehicle's design and technical makeup.[11]  They ascribe the term to any vehicle with two, three, and now even four-doors, for the term's perceived luxury or sporting appeal.
(wiki)

Of course, none of this matters for me if I want to buy a car or not.  I just won't be calling it a coupe when it's not.  Why?  Because I'm a car enthusiast.   Cool

Bah, they can call it a coupe if that's what marketing tells them to but it's NOT a coupe.  Like calling an M45 a spyder because it's sportier looking but "Spyder" is just "convertible" in Italian.  Or calling a two door version of the Maz Quattroporte a Quattroporte Coupe which would literally mean "4 door 2 door".  It's marketing BS.  That being said, it's still very nice looking.  Let's just hope it looks like that when it comes out.  Remember what happened to the XF and the Essence that morphed into the M56.  If so, lol, who knows, maybe I'll kick myself again and buy this thing.  Really like the wheels.

It should be exact same or almost identical
Knowing BMW, all their concepts made it to production almost unchanged
So I expect some minor tweaks, but nothing major
