Hurst,
Ohm didn't begin to say any of those things that you childishly implied.  If you read is post carefully you will see that he was not disagreeing with you.

That does raise some good questions, what are we going to do with them now?  Give them to China??? are you kidding me?  So they can make us some more useless crap?  Why isn't there a us recycle plant that would want them?

I'm more worried about the med/long term effects of this plan.  Ie the cash for a car you cant afford stimulus plan.  With sales people eager to make some sales, you think they care if the customer can afford it when they can barely afford to stay afloat?  Doubtful...  They didn't seem to care when they were making good money, why would they care now?

I also love how they make it sound like we are really making a huge impact on our consumption by taking some cars with horrible milage and replaceing them with cars with 50% better milage!  To now end up with more cars with slightly better than horrible mileage!  Woohoo! Progress!  loco  Hondas have been getting over 30mpg since the 80s, I'm still struggling to see how we have come so far.  They just did an article recently comparing the new civic hybrid to the old crx.  I haven't gotten to read the article but so true.  They got pretty much the same mileage, WITHOUT batteries.

There are plenty of good uses for the old cars (and I think RH was trying to point that out) but the bill calls for them to be destroyed.

Sorry, I have no idea about what you're referring to.  If Ohm wasn't in agreement with me, then the implication is that he did a terrible job expressing that view.  I don't know...

Exactly.

(I honestly don't remember if i posted in here or not, so here goes)

Cash for clunkers was a mess. It destroyed both new car sales and used car sales for consumers (from my perspective). I also agree with the fact that destroying the cars is just... wrong, on so many levels. To my UNDERSTANDING, GM, Chrysler, etc, RAMPED UP production to meet the demands of the cash for clunkers. I don't see how they could have possibly expected to run the cars through production, get them on lots, and sell them, before "the money" ran out. Dealers were just finally starting to deplete their inventory. It seems like they will now be filling back up with the influx of these cars that were produced to meet a demand which has already passed?

I also think this was much like the mortgage situation years ago. Bait-and-switch.

"What? You only have a $200K house? You could have a $500K house with the same payment!"
....
"What? Your car is worth LESS than $10K? You could be driving something MUCH nicer!"
So they cleverly lure the american masses into dealerships to trade in their 'clunkers'. I don't know about you guys, but car sales people have a goal - to get you out the door with the most expensive car they can at the highest interest rate possible.

The only thing I can see coming from this is something similar to the mortgage crisis except in a much shorter period - people who went into the dealership expecting to get their ~$4K and intending on buying a "$15K car", walking out with a $15K car with $7K in options; which in 3 months they will realize they can actually not afford.

I had actually written a pretty large blurb in this topic when i was shopping for cars (.. LS) but opted to not post it.

At any rate, I wish the clunkers thing would just silently fade away, but alas, I don't think it will.

I know it's over, but there's still a lot of it being discussed (dealers allegedly not getting payouts, etc). When I say "silently go away" - I mean from the media, etc.

An Aston Martin DB7?  http://cache-foo.gawkerassets.com/gawker/assets/images/12/2009/09/500x_C4C_Exotic_DB7.jpg

Man, I'd love that BMW 850, love this car...Bentley, Rousch F150...The owers must have been brainwashed to get rid of these "clunkers".

We could have sold these cars for Argentina, as I said above.  Heck I would happily pay for these myself!
