Criss-cross or front-to-back? And how?
« on: June 12, 2008, 05:36:15 PM »

Okay, there are all kinds of theories on how you should rotate your tires ... and shouldn't rotate your tires. Actually, I haven't always been a fan of rotating at all, but if I DID rotate, I always thought the "experts" advised only front-to-rear rotation (which is easy enough).

So now I find Lexus recommends criss-crossing the tires, and lots of the "experts" seem to agree. The problem is that they don't all agree on HOW to do it (and there IS a difference).

The sources that recommend criss-crossing have 3 different patterns:

1.) Every tire goes to the opposite side and the opposite corner. The "true" criss-cross.

2.) Fronts cross over as they go to the rear, and the rears go to the front on the same side.

3.) Rears cross over as they go to the front, and the fronts go to the rear on the same side.

The difference in 2.) and 3.) seems subtle until you think about it. In my case, where I have some feathering on the fronts, I tend toward 2.), so the front tires turn in the opposite direction and wear down the high points of the feathers.

Anyone have any words of wisdom on this whole subject?

Mike

Staggered rims FT-(rotation)-L

Seriously though, I've only heard the criss-cross method never the same side-cross method.

Here is  one example (this one from www.autorepair.about.com):

Does your owner's/service manual give you any instructions on the proper way to rotate?
