Dealers!
« on: October 05, 2010, 07:27:03 PM »

Have these guys not heard of the internet? Of Kelly Blue Book? Of Edmunds? Of semi-intelligent life on this planet?

I walked into the Honda dealer on Sunday and said make me a deal. New 2011 Odyssey Touring Elite plus trade in on our '05 Touring. Since the Elite is not available yet, the declined to give a figure. Even an estimate. Yes, it is available on Edmunds! As I didn't have our van with us, the declined to give us a trade in value (though it is serviced regularly at this dealership and our regular advisor vouches for the condition of our vehicle). And, yes, it is on Edmunds.

So I called them this morning, told 'em to hurry as I got a killer deal from Toyota on a new Sienna. They call back and offer $6.5k below Trade-In value. I told them to call back when they get serious and faxed the Sales Manager the kbb and Edmund's valuations. So they call back again and ask what is on the van. I told them it is a Touring. It has everything, and to go look up their own records!

Ugggghhhhh!

Maybe. Our service advisor at this dealership is the best, and I wanted him to get a piece of the sales pie. I made that clear to the Manager that the only reason I was even thinking of buying from them was because of him.

that does suck... not like the new vans are selling like hot cakes....

at least you have options....

hawaii.... only one toyota/lexus dealer.  Only one Infiniti dealer.... one Merc, porsche, land rover, Jag dealer all owned by one entity...... hows that for cramping your dealing ability...  Only thing you can do is say you will buy this brand vs. the other brand..

sucks over here....

One word. Hawaii. You live in paradise, and have to deal with a few garden snakes. I have no sympathy for you!

we just have worms... no snakes here, but at the zoo.....hehehehe

I hear ya, not complaining... but car brands are monopolized...  forgot to mention the Ferrari, Lambo, Bentley, Maseratti, lotus and audi are all under one dealer as well....  there goes my bargain ability to say I can get a better deal on a ferrari at the other dealer. Grin

I hear you on sticking with a service guy you trust.  That is almost more worth it than anything else.  Though I must say I have been extremely happy with every Infiniti Dealership I have been to for service.  Its something I will definitely miss with my next vehicle.  There are two or three Ford dealerships in the area so hopefully one of them has a service department that is worth a damn.  In fact, that brings up a good point... that if you have options when buying a vehicle it would be a good idea to introduce yourself to the service manager and see where it goes from there.  I actually did this when I had my R32.  It was the first AWD VW and it was low production so many dealerships didn't have experience with them.  I bought the car in Asheville NC where I loved the dealership.  They also did Lotus Porsche and Audi so they had a great service department. Unfortunately that was when I was in school in Savannah.  When I went to the service desk at Vaden VW I asked a simple question.  What is the service interval on the fluid in the rear diff.  Audi had the same Haldex awd system in the TT and their interval was slightly shorter than VW's recommendation so I was fishing to see what he would say.  He is totally caught off guard and in a degrading tone tries to tell me its a sealed transmission like I don't know what I'm talking about.  I give him a blank stare and says your never suppose to change it, your only suppose to check it every 20k.  I couldn't help but laugh a bit and tell him his service department would never be laying a hand on my vehicle.  This was the service manager, the one who is suppose to be the leader!?  I ended up driving over an hour to Charleston, SC to have my car serviced.  The second the guy comes out to do an inspection and check me in he and says... wow, I can't wait to see a turbo on one of these.  That is when I knew the two hour commute was worth it every time.

Well, all I can say to this is, there's a reason they are car salesmen.  Look I'm sorry if this sounds mean but let's face it, we aren't talking Goldman Sachs I Bankers here with Ivy degrees.  Most of the people they run into aren't savy.  These days, that's very different due to the internet (thank God for the internet!) but you still get the piker that comes in and gets screwed.  If my 70 year old mom went in she would have gotten hosed and taken that deal.  The Honda dealer had no idea you were savy and didn't bother doing the extra work because. . . well because he's a car salesman.  If it were you or me, we wouldve known you and your cars and your history and what kind of deal could be made.  I wouldve put you in the back office and pulled the paperwork and figured it out together with no BS.  But that's us.  If I'm an ex shoe salesman with a GED and am just trying to make rent?  Maybe not.  Now I'm the worlds toughest customer because I'll kill a deal over a dollar (yeah I really will) and will shop the entire country for the right price and then bully you to get something done.  (shrug) I just enjoy buying cars for this very reason, but most people hate it.  Don't take offense.  Just come back at him and crush him.
