Ford Announces new Engine Lineup for F150
« on: August 14, 2010, 07:24:33 AM »

There are a few highlights and the video can be a bit boring but also interesting in some places.  The engine I am most interested in is the ECOboost.  I still don't know why they are sticking with that name...  Its going to be the "flagship" motor and they have yet to release the hp/tq numbers but have done quite a bit to convert it to "truck duty".  The EB also has the highest tow rating so that would suggest it has the same or higher numbers than the 6.2L which comes in at 411hp and 430lb/ft.  One interesting thing is that the whole lineup now gets 10k oil changes and 20% better fuel economy.  The workhorse engine is going to be a truck version of the 5.0L and the V6 from the stang also made it over.  The 5.4L is now finished and the Raptor is sadly only available with the 6.2L.  My guess is the EB couldn't handle the heat testing, who knows..?  All F150s will now get a standard 6spd select shift with a +/- on the shifter.

20min vid - EB info starts at 20:30 if I remember correctly...

I have been following the ecoboost stuff too (and hate the name); I think its a giant leap forward for AMERICAN car makers. If ford can pull it off with little to no problems in a medium duty truck I think sales will be impressive. I had a family member looking at trucks a few weeks ago and told them they should wait for the new f150 ecoboost and see what its like, specificallly due to the gas mileage.

Ps - why are you lamenting the 6.2 only in the raptor? Overkill, or were you fond of the 5.4? Just curious.

haha,
Not fond of the 5.4 but hoping for an EB Raptor...  Grin  I want my cake and eat it too!  It may happen in the future with a TTV8 but i'd be happy with the 6.  I'm sure they are worried about people abusing them off-road and the turbos not standing up to the heat in the desert.  BUT... one can still dream of a big truck with 35" off road tires getting close to 20mpg.  I will definitely be getting a truck in the next year or two and while I love the idea/functionality of a SuperCrew Raptor, that EcoBoost engine is going to be a hard option to pass.

My vehicles are all pretty purpose driven.  As far as work goes it looks like I'm going to be heading into stunt camera work so my creative gears started turning when I first saw the Raptor.  What I'm looking for is the ultimate photo/video vehicle.  Why wait for the SuperCrew?  So I can comfortably have enough room for a driver, two camera operators, and a director.  Why the Raptor?  Because I can take an entire film crew with gear where nobody else can.  Personally, the off-roading I do isn't about speed, its about abilities getting to any location I require (landscapes).  Nothing I couldn't modify another F150 to do, but having a factory over built truck with a warranty the way I intend to use it does make some sense to me.  It also just looks so darn good with the extra width.  Cool

I wonder if premium fuel is recommended?  That would be a bummer, specially if you want to take it anywhere you want.  I suspect regular fuel won't have the pretty HP numbers and mileage.

That's a good question, Ford seem to be pretty good about not requiring it but when it comes to boost premium does help the numbers.
