HUMMER's End Game

Six weeks.

That's how long HUMMER has before its fate is sealed at General Motors [GM  1.75    -0.25  (-12.55%)   ]. GM says that by the end of March it will reach a decision to either sell the brand or phase it out. My gut, based on talking with people in GM and the industry, is HUMMER is sold, but for far, far less than what GM wants.

Right now, a Chinese manufacturer and a New York based private equity firm are looking at HUMMER. GM would love it if it could get either suitor to pay $600 Million.

Dream on boys.

If GM gets $300 million it will be lucky according to most I have talked with. And for that, what will the buyer get? A couple lines of tooling to build the Hummer line-up and of course the HUMMER brand.

Knowing that it's essentially giving away HUMMER, why doesn't GM simply hold onto the iconic brand and idle it?

It is because shedding or shutting down HUMMER is a relatively cheap way GM CEO Rick Wagoner can show the Obama Auto Team that his company is re-structuring the business. And believe me, GM executives know they are now in a game of showing the Federal government they "get it". What better way to send that message than to drop a brand symbolic of the gas-guzzling, sometimes arrogant approach that epitomized GM a few years ago.

Remember those days?

Back then, HUMMER was red hot. When the hulking SUV rolled down the street (taking up almost all of its lane) it trampled over the opinion of critics who called it the ultimate gas-guzzler. Fans could care less. Gas was cheap and driving a HUMMER made you feel invincible. The future was so bright, GM convinced dozens of dealers to build stand-alone “Quonset hut" HUMMER dealerships. Looking back now, the absurdity of it all is crystal clear.

Now those dealerships are monuments to how GM lost its way. Critics are getting the last laugh as HUMMER, a brand synonymous with being big and bold, quietly fades in the rear view mirror.

Well, I like the Hummer.  It's different, it's squarish, it's manly, and it does have off road capabilities.

For those reasons, it has nothing to do with GM.  I hope GM sells it to somebody else.

the off-road capabilities of an H3 or H2 are nothing marvelous.  the H2 is just a tahoe/silverado with a modified exterior.  The capabilities are really unchanged other than better approach/departure angles.  The H1 is great, but GM really has nothing to do with that engineering.

I beg to differ.  The H2 and the H3 are really used for off road.  Have you seen the modified H3 at the last Paris-Dakar driven by Robby Gordon?  I still buy off road magazines once in a while, and I see a lot of H3s there, and H2, in action.

It's not the same thing, Nascar cars are the same by regulation.  No such thing in Paris-Dakar, where anything goes.  Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero won many times.

none, but that's not the point.  They had modified engine, transmission and suspensions, obviously, but it wasn't a baja bug with plastic on the top resembling the H3.

I agree, after watching vids on you tube, seriously, I think a Jeep and my Tracker can do
most of what I've seen.  There is a video of a new Hummer H2 going over some rocks and
the front axles broke.  I've never been a fan of the hummer H2, after driving two, way to
big and wide IMO, hard to see out the sides and back windows.  The things sure get a lot
of attention though when driving them.   Cheesy

The H3 or the H2?  I was talking about the H3, which I like.  I like what the H2 represents, a slap on the face of all the green stuff hoopla.  It's not for me, does not mean I hate it either.

the H3T isn't bad... its a nice compromise between a small (S10) and large (silverado) sized truck.  But the regular H3 is just marketing... people who long for a hummer but don't want to drop near 60k for one can opt for the weird looking trailblazer, lol.

H2 is a Tahoe, H3 is a Colorado.  They share platforms, its well documented, just minor variations to make them ride higher and give the auro of offroadishness.  Stock, they both leave a LOT to be desired for offroad capability IMO.  Not much better than the other two considering they're supposed to be offroad capable.  They were mostly ego purchases, not for any kind of real functionality.  Interiors were horrible and ridiculously cramped for the size of them.  I had a H3 as a rental once, we could barely fit 3 grown men in it and I was struggling for leg room as the driver.  You kidding me???

Joe, mean a vid like this? Grin

is it bad when your wheels are pointed in at each other? lol

i think what you can take from this (realistically) is that having a gigantic hummer doesn't make up for offroad driving skills... someone with enough skill could probably get Joe's tracker through there Wink

It's irrelevant if they're based on pick up trucks: it's an advantage for any serious off roader, it's easier to get aftermarket brakes, wheels, suspension lifts and differentials for them that way.  Pick up trucks, with some mods, are excellent off roaders, you see more pick ups on and off roads than you see many of the alternatives you pick.  A car based on that is a plus, IMHO.
