Hybrid Cars May Include Fake Vroom for Safety
« on: October 14, 2009, 07:25:24 PM »

Quote
They have finally succeeded. Plug-in hybrid and electric cars, it turns out, not only reduce air pollution, they cut noise pollution as well with their whisper-quiet motors. But that has created a different problem. They aren’t noisy enough.

So safety experts, worried that hybrids pose a threat if pedestrians, children and others can’t hear them approaching, want automakers to supply some digitally enhanced vroom. Indeed, just as cellphones have ring tones, “car tones” may not be far behind — an option for owners of electric vehicles to choose the sound their cars emit.

Working with Hollywood special-effects wizards, some hybrid auto companies have started tinkering in sound studios, rather than machine shops, to customize engine noises

Well, I wouldn't mind a cool starship sound actually.  But most of those electric/hybrids look like appliances to me.  At most they deserved something stupid like the Jetson's flying car...That would be soooo gay (not that there's anything wrong with that of course...)

PS: they beat me to it:

Nice.

I think people (pedestrians) are completely oblivious anyway. My IS-F is definitely not 'loud' but it has a noticeable rumble even at idle. I can drive through a parking lot and people will not even hear me, and then turn around and act all surprised that an actual car is attempting to use the road and then they scurry away...

Apparently we just solved who killed the electric car... it was hurst... b/c it didn't make the right boom boom noises.  The electric car, making the oil and auto industries shiver in their boots...

 Roll Eyes

No need to warn us about some evil motive behind the criticism of the electric hype.  Step down from your High Horse for a minute and consider that, apart from the Tesla, most electric cars plain suck.  It's fun to make fun of them, just that.

Maybe you think we "need" them to save the world from global warming/freezing, have you bought yours already?
