Now there's going to be a Lexus version of the Prius:

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/10/02/confirmed-lexus-to-build-prius-based-hybrid/

My prediction is that it's going to sell a lot at MSRP+, specially here in CA.  I hope Lexus makes a ton of money out of this car - more money for R&D for real cars, as far as I'm concerned.

I posted that pic a couple months ago... nice to know its confirmed but is it really newsworthy?  I dont know.  Lexus is kinda known for giving the green "appearance" to less than economical cars.  I mean the LX400h is not very fuel efficient.  My mom has one, and Trin has one, HWY mileage is only marginally better than the gasoline counterpart.  The GS hybrid isn't that hot either... a lot more fuel efficiency is coming out of diesel with CVT.  Now if they can make it plug and play, that would be substantial.

But what about city mileage?  Also, if it's a Prius mechanically, it surely delivers?  I don't know.

I'd like to have a table showing the city/highway mpg for hybrids and their gas counterparts.  Any link to one?

here's an article:

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/news/2008/10/affordable-hybrids/hybrids-vs.-conventional-cars/affordable-hybrids-hybrids-vs-conventional-cars.htm

And here's an excerpt where they drove two civics cross country to compare:

Quote
The Payoff
Over the entire trip, the Civic EX averaged 33.8 mpg. The Hybrid averaged 42.0 mpg. So, the hybrid technology was worth 8.2 mpg for our run. That's a 24 percent fuel economy gain. At New York and California prices (at the time we made the drive), we spent $168 to keep the EX in gas and $135 on the Hybrid, or a savings of $33 for 3065 miles--that's a penny a mile.

All said and done, if you were driving the same route, at the same speeds, in the same conditions, it would take roughly 144,000 miles before the Hybrid paid back its $1440 premium over the Civic EX.

This one is at least a year old, but still decent.

As for your specific question about comaparing mileage, I'd say just pulling up the specific vehicles on edmunds would probably be the best way to look at it.

Toyota seriously considering separate Prius brand

Quote
James E. Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. recently (...) said he was actively lobbying Toyota for the Prius brand spinoff and that the company was working on future models to expand the lineup. Lentz said he was pushing for a Yaris-sized Prius and a "Prius on steroids." He wouldn't comment on rumors of a Prius crossover, however. Lentz also said the new line would be sold alongside Toyota vehicles instead of separately like the company's Lexus brand.

When might this new Prius brand be approved by Toyota? Lentz would only say that he has a meeting in Japan next month.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/11/toyota-seriously-considering-separate-prius-brand/

So it's going to be Toyota, Scion, Prius and Lexus.   A new GM in the making?  How big are they going to be?  What's next a TMC "professional grade Toyota" and an 'el cheapo" Toyotac?   Cheesy

that was pretty funny commentary.  I would be kinda surprised if they did this, just because supposedly the whole reason they really started looking at the Prius and other hybrids was so they could keep their lineup relatively small yet still have vehicles like the land cruiser, 4runner, LX570, Sequioia, Tundra.  They needed the prius to help out their MPG/CAFE restrictions.

Another article on autoblog said a toyota official stated the lexus line was going completely hybrid... so i dont know how accurate the info is.

Appliances are what Toyota makes best, not sports cars. Smiley
