Prius vs Mustang v6...which one would you buy?
« on: June 29, 2010, 12:50:50 PM »

Okay, so on one side we have the new Prius plugin-hybrid.  Since electric energy is so cheap now, let's just add to your A/C, to the multiple 600W computers in your home and all that...A freakin' CAR!      Fun factor?  3.  Coolness factor: around the campus: 10.  Anywhere else: 7.

Sounds smart.  laugh

On the other side, the new V6 engine on the Mustang rated at 31mpg.  Fun factor?  8.  Coolness factor: around the campus: 2.  Anywhere else: 8.

Here's the reports:

Prius plugin:

Quote
So far, the Inside Line team has racked up more than 500 miles in the plug-in Prius and the experience has to be considered somewhat of a let down. The team has averaged 62 miles per gallon, a good number for sure, but one that many drivers of the more conventional Prius have easily achieved on a regular basis

Inside Line even tracked the cost for charging the Prius and came back with an average of 65 cents per fill. Now, for those wondering about the payback period on the plug-in Prius, Toyota estimates that the plug-in version would hit the streets with a base price of around $27,550, a $4,000 premium over a traditional Prius. Given the plug-in's slightly improved efficiency, one would have to drive 215,100 miles to make up for the additional cash laid out to start, but even that figure fails to factor in the cost of charging the Prius. Dependent upon the cost of electricity, a plug-in Prius will likely cost more to drive than its more traditional hybrid counterpart. The plug-in Prius might not be a wise investment, but Inside Line still adamently believes that it's one of the best hybrids available. We won't argue with that. Follow the jump to watch the plug-in Prius in action
  (autoblog)

How do they get this number, I'll never know (remember Nissan's all electric 200+ mpg?).  They should just compare the energy cost over the same period of time, driving at the same speeds, including highways @65mph.

OTOH, the new Mustang V-6 got 48.5mpg on the track.

Quote
Ford has countered with a 305 horsepower V6 that gets an EPA rated 31 mpg. To demonstrate the excellent gas mileage of this new Mustang, they went around the half-mile Bristol Motor Speedway 1,457 times…. on a single tank of gas. This means the Mustang got 48.5 miles per gallon. Take that, Prius!
(gas2.0)

So 62mpg (driving an appliance) vs 32mpg (or better, if you drive it like a Prius owner) driving a decent car.  Which one would you get?   Grin

Ha! I'd stab myself in the neck with a letter opener before I'd ever be seen driving a Prius.

Besides the extreme fugliness of the car itself, which is considerable, there is the issue of the image it projects ... an image I most certainly do not want to share. The mere thought I might be considered part of the save-the-whales, global-warming, egghead-environmentalist crowd gives me the squirts.

I say drill, baby, drill, and drive the Mustang (or a 420hp V8 Infiniti M56 like me!).

^ I'll ignore that, since this isn't the politics forum and I don't want to start a fight Ohmster would have to end.   Wink

Wait, they want to prove gas mileage using a oval, banked race track? Any other irrelevant mileage they'd like to share?

Have you driven a Prius?  I'd put the fun factor to -3... Wink

As for the Stang stunt I'd have to side with LP...

True, but note that I asked to get the right numbers for comparison:

Also, I don't think that 48mpg is that far off from the totally artificial way Prius owners drive their cars (hypermilers and all) to boost their numbers...Have you ever seen ANY Prius doing any half decent launch at a stop light?  They're happy to be as slow as they can get away with.

very true... its hard to justify on a car site.  I mean the money saved is negligible if you compare it to a similarly sized gas powered compact car's price.
