Rental Car Driving Impressions
« on: May 19, 2009, 08:57:12 PM »

I thought I'd set up a thread for driving impressions of the various cars that some or all of us rent from time to time.  I rent vehicles fairly regularly and they are usually on the economical side or minivans, or pick ups.  I'm sure some of you guys may rent mid and higher end cars and maybe even the odd sports car.  Post up details of whatever car you have rented so we get a broad range of vehicles.

i should invite my wife back on the site for this... her company only pays for like economy cars, so even with hertz status she still regularly gets crappy cars... the ones i've driven (and suck) are:

Ford Escape
Ford Focus
Toyota Rav4
Ford Mustang Conv.

Jeep Wrangler was fun though

Well if your looking for economy here goes.  I like to save my company money wherever I can and sometimes a very little is all I need.  For my first rental I had a Pontiac G5 last week for a quick trip to Seattle.

This car is about the cheapest vehicle I have ever driven.  It was bare bones with roll up windows, manual mirrors, no cruise, no power locks, cloth interior and the only "option" was AC which I had no need for.

The exterior of the car was a little on the sporty side for such an inexpensive vehicle but, unfortunately rode on stock wheels with rather unnattractive wheel covers.  I really don't understand why any manufacturer would produce a wheel cover that has huge voids to show the inner steel rim.  It did have a spoiler on the back.  The drive was a little on the harsh side with fairly stiff steering and a bit of a rut following demeanor.

The interior was drab and lacking in any features.  Again I must stress that this was the very base model and likely had a very cheap price tag.  There wasn't even a center console.  the only creature comfort besides AC was a AM/FM radio with CD player.  Interior sound was unimpressive but tolerable.  Oddly the cluster had numerous displayable info items like mileage, instant mileage, remaining oil lifespan, oil temp and info on average speed and trip distance.  It seemed to me that they could have foregone the relatively useless info in favor of a center console/armrest.

I didn't really get a chance to open up the little fourbanger under the hood but it didn't rev as high as expected at highway speeds so I assume it had a little pep to it.  Fuel economy was excellent with mileage at 7.9 Litres per 100Km (sorry for the metric) average for the trip including border lineups and Seattle city driving.

Overall I'd say this vehicle gives you very little but at a very little price tag.  I can't imagine driving it on a regular basis but if you were on a very tight budget and needed cheap basic transportation it may serve well.

Next time look for my review of the awesome Kia Rondo EX.  Woo Hoo.

Too funny. I actually signed in to a create a thread RE: my "adventures in rentals" and saw you beat me to it.

I have a car rented for a week starting last saturday, I was booked through hertz for a class "I" (Lincoln Towncar or Cadillac DTS); when I spoke to them/got there they said they had neither (what is the point of a reservation.......Huh??); so I had a choice of:

nissan altima 2.5L
chevrolet impala
ford mustang
saturn vue

The vue was the least "dirty" of the vehicles, but a nightmare as a whole as I soon learned. The XM was installed but disabled, the transmission was questionable at best, and any turn of the steering wheel resulted in a perplexing thunk. It had the "bigger" V6 with the 6-AT. The torque steer on it was ridiculous (FWD). It also has the worst turning radius I have ever experienced on anything. The seats were AMAZINGLY uncomfortable as well. The car only had 10K miles on it but raddled like it had 100,000.

On day 3(?) I realized that the ()*!@$'ing tag EXPIRES on 07-01-09. I called the local hertz, which of course had no cars. I called the airport hertz, which had some cars but no luxury (which is what they owed me)... but they ended up getting one in and "reserving" it for me.

I drove 45 minutes from work to the airport to pickup the car in the pouring rain. I stood in the rain while i moved my stuff from the vue to the

town car. After a few minutes of sitting in the town car i realize NONE of the interior lights work, at all (it had a mere 6500 miles). I bickered with them about that and they just said "it's all we have" (which was a blatant lie); at that point I had some personal issues going on so just cut my losses and left.

I get a few minutes down the road only to realize the RADIO doesn't work at all. I figured the fuse that killed the interior lights also went to something else - apparently it was the power antenna! I turned around and went back and proceeded to stand at the window while the manager ignored me and the dispatch manager answered an arsenal of idiotic questions from someone on the phone. After he got off the phone i explained the situation and he said he'd find me another car........

Nissan Xterra. Definitely not my 1st choice; but whatever.
The vehicle has 10K miles on it and feels much more solid than the saturn. It is definitely much less equipped, though.
Oddly enough this Xterra is equipped with 4WD, and nothing else (except power windows). I'm surprised it has a cd player, really. The vehicle drives decently (better than the saturn's ridiculously soft/squishy/rolly ride). I have to say, being a car snob, and paying luxury car rates - I am pretty annoyed to be driving around in a nissan xterra (which doesn't even have a compass!); no power anything except windows/locks.

I forgot all about this thread Oz.  Sorry to hear that your rental experience has been so crappy but you now know the kinds of vehicles I rent through my company.  It really is odd to drive these dirty, messed up, squishy suspension rentals.  My FX is not the pinnacle of luxury and extravagance but I always feel a sense of loss when driving a rental.

I hear you. The FX isn't meant to be the "pinnacle of luxury" per-se, but is a VERY well executed vehicle (i LOVED my FX; and have considered buying a used one Smiley )... I think some of us ge so used to all the creature comforts of our cars (and the specific reasons WE chose to bought them) that we become even more analytical when we drive something else (although the saturn really was a turd-on-wheels).

Well, I called a DIFFERENT hertz again yesterday and got a much more pleasant person. It goes to show how the people behind the desk at the rental places can really do whatever they want... I traded the Xterra 4x4 in for this:

True.. they weren't "supposed" to give me the G37 but they did (the secondary location, that is). From my understanding it's a "local car only" and supposed to be billed per mile, but the rate code I have it under has unlimited miles. Yay!

Not bad Oz.  So, how much would the G normally be to rent?

Oh, and don't forget to give us a little review.  I am curious to see what kind of condition a G rental is kept in.  Most rental cars get beat on and age prematurely.

The G37 is normally $895.85(USD)/week incl taxes! It includes mileage based on per-day rental, so that would include 1400 miles. My rental includes unlimited miles (although I don't think i'm exceeding 1400 for once!)

At any rate - it's costing me $290 a week with taxes! Smiley

I do intend on doing a small writeup/review. I had actually started to write it already then decided I wanted to try and do a little better job. Smiley In the meantime, for what it's worth - it's surprisingly a G37 journey (eg, not base).. so it must have been whatever package the dealer had available at the time.
