Return of the Mustang 5.0
« on: May 12, 2008, 02:48:40 PM »

Could it be true that the 2010 Ford Mustang GT will be propelled by a 5 Liter powerplant that returns BETTER fuel economy than the 4.6L all while producing an additional 100hp?  Sounds too good to be true!  This thing ought to be a bargain as well, 30-35 grand for 400hp?  All I can say is wow!

Spy photographers have spotted a mule for the upcoming 2010 Ford Mustang testing on the roads of Michigan. While the mule looks unassuming thanks to its current-generation Mustang body, the real news is what lies beneath the pony car's hood — an all-new V8.

The two Mustang mules spotted are actually test beds for the 2010's all-new 5.0L V8. The details giving the new powerplant away are subtle — the only significant visual cue is the car's exhaust setup — but our sources confirm that the Blue Oval has indeed begun testing the new engine.

The mules also appear to have the 2010 Mustang's interior, although under heavy camouflage.

While Ford has yet to make an official announcement, it is believed that the 5.0L unit will replace the 4.6L V8 currently used in the Mustang.

The new engine is being developed under the codename 'Coyote' and will kick out 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Despite the 100 horsepower boost over the current Mustang GT, the new engine will return better fuel mileage than the 4.6L powerplant.

The new 5-liter powerplant will be built at Ford’s Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario.

If the Mustang comes back with the 5liter, I may have to pick up one to relive my younger, single life.  I just may have to bring my license plate out of retirement too...OHNO50.

Yes, it's here!  Sweet.  I like it:

Autoblog:

First Drive: 2011 Ford Mustang GT changes the game

Quote
The reborn 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS is the 2010 Ford Mustang GT's most obvious competitor (obviously). While the Camaro is certainly a head turner, it's just not that great of an all around performance car. However, despite the 2010 Mustang GT coming out on top in many comparisons against its crosstown rival, one fact is undeniable: When it comes to power, the Camaro SS kicked the Mustang GT's butt up and down the block. Across the drag strip, too. The 6.2-liter LS3-equipped SS (manual only, as automatic Camaros get the weaker L99 motor) produces a screaming 426 horsepower and 420 rumbling pound-feet of torque, enough mojo to embarrass the 2010 Mustang GT's relatively wimpy 4.6-liter V8 with its 315 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. True, the Mustang handled better, rode better, had a much better interior and cost less, but at the end of the day we're talking muscle cars. Gumption matters. Chevy was king. Ford had to act.

And act it did. Meet the 2011 Ford Mustang GT, or as everyone is already calling it, the 5.0. That's right, Ford is offering enthusiasts an honest to goodness 5.0-liter V8 (302 cubic inches, baby! Check out our Deep Dive for all the technical mumbo jumbo) in the 2011 Mustang GT. As we're sure you know by now, thanks to some fancy breathing, the all new small-block produces 412 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. That's less than the Camaro, sure, but remember that the Mustang is lighter than the Chevy by a good 300 pounds. Besides, it's looking like Ford has decided to underrate the 5.0's output by about 30 ponies for who knows what reason. Meaning that while Ford might be using invisible ink, the Mustang's got the Camaro beat on paper. But what about in the real world? Make the jump to find out.

There's a new lower spoiler and air dam up front and the rear wheels now have tire spats. All of the exterior changes plus an underbody aeroshield add up to a four-percent more aerodynamic car, and help this 412-hp brute achieve a very respectable 26 mpg on the highway. Also, let's not forget the big, shiny 5.0 badges. A1A Beach Front Avenue has been put on notice!

412HP, undercut by 30HP or so?   WOW...

How much does the convertible 5.0 would weight?  Hummm.  Interesting.  The hard top is ugly, though, and looks dated already.  This one looks like it's ready for some off-roading...

I dont think it is amazing
It's "normal" to get decent milage with new engines
Vettes have been pretty good on gas for years, while smoking any mustangs
They rated at 16/26mpg

Corvette?  I don't think they're up against each other at all.  The Camaro, Challenger, the 370Z, the Hyundai whatever, those I'd feel are more direct competitors.   They even mentioned the weak 354HP Audi S5 (I thought the S5 was going for 400+ like the M3?)...Also, I like Ford Sync, heard good things in carputers forums.  I would be all over the Mustang if it didn't look so bad.   The convertible is attractive IF it fits two kids in the back, and just because you see less of ugly roof lines.

Now if they're going to charge Corvette prices for it, then, yeah, maybe you have a point.

RH,
My point wasnt to compare vette with stang as a car per se
I was just trying to say that 400HP engine producing decent MPG is not such big of a deal now these days
It definetely feels good though

I wish more cars were like that

(EDIT)Oh, I got it now.  I agree that the MPG is good, but common nowadays, but although Autoblog emphasizes it, I don't usually care for MPG. Gas is still very cheap in the US, IMHO.

I do think the Mustang is very light by American standards.  It's the only Ford I'd pay a second look, other than the F-150.

I'm thinking this 5.0 Mustang is going to be faster than the new Camaro SS.   Undecided

On a race track for sure... I have yet to drive the Camaro, but I got to drive that red GT500 and Ford has really done their homework on the suspension in that thing.
