IIHS finds sub-compacts fare poorly against mid-size sedans (
Autoblog
)
Quote
One of the biggest concerns people have with buying smal cars is crash safety. More specifically, there are concerns about what happens when a small car meets a larger one in an accident. Regardless of size, all cars are required to meet the same crash safety standards. The problem is that crash tests are done by slamming a car into a standardized barrier, while accidents in the real world don't generally involve impacts with standardized barriers.
When cars of different sizes collide there are a huge number of variables that impact the result. One of those is kinetic energy, which is a function of mass and velocity. A larger, heavier vehicle has more energy than a smaller, lighter one, and in combination with less crush space, the latter tends to come off worse in an accident. The Insurance institute for Highway Safety has run a series of crash tests between sub-compact and mid-sized cars and in all three cases the small cars did substantially worse than they did in the standard crash tests. All of the small cars earned good scores in regular testing but did poorly in the new tests. The IIHS press release explains the results after the jump
Duh.
E=mc2...more mass, more energy, more speed, much more energy! No airbags and clever structure (and marketing BS) can defy physics.
But people keep buying those subcompacts, to carry their kids even...argh.
I wonder why we don't hear them testing against the likes of F-350 or a even a freq. find fully loaded 3/4 truck, like a Tundra. It would kill the subcompact niche.

Wouldn't be a problem if most of America weren't driving 2+ ton tanks just to haul their fat ass to Wendy's.
Even most mid-size sedans are pushing two tons anymore.

That won't be a problem soon. I suspect those who chose subcompacts are doing a service to Humanity by removing themselves from the Gene pool anyway...LOL

they should just sue the IIHS since they have classified their cars as being SAFE per their own testing and crash safety standards

Well, I don't know what's your problem. It wasn't meant to be an insult, but a prediction. Big cars aren't going to disappear, what you're going to do about it?

Funny videos. Problem is, trucks aren't going to disappear in our lifetimes. It's a fact. Hard to be smart and go against the facts, right?
Now you can be "smart" and buy a Smart. LOL Good luck surviving.

Who's talking about trucks disappearing? Trucks are highly useful utility vehicles, but we're not talking about trucks here. And if you haven't been paying attention, SUVs based on trucks are disappearing. That's a fact. And it won't take our lifetime to see them go away or be reduced to a niche vehicle again.
What's ironic is you condemn sub-compacts as death traps, yet you endorse motorcycles which take everything you attack a Smart car for from a safety perspective and just amp it up, lol.

Haha
It's definetely a problem here
People buy SUVs even if dont need one
It's like: "...Oh, i have a kid now, let me switch to SUV, my mid-size sedan does not have enough space..."
I'm not even talking about those who make trips from gas stations to Wendys as HD said, and use their gaslers only for that
When i was driving in Rome, Italy i realized that my car was one of the "SUV" there
Anything there was smaller than my 335i
Whole Europe is on much smaller cars on average compared to US

Yes, the cars there on average are much smaller (look at the inner city roads!). Except for the footballers who drive the 'big' SUVs. Their family cars are much more efficient and practical. Renault had just introduce this fantastic 'mini van' as we were leaving the UK. It had family oriented features that no vehicle in the US could match.
