Renault had just introduce this fantastic 'mini van' as we were leaving the UK. It had family oriented features that no vehicle in the US could match.
We just get 20+ cupholders in family cars here, such a cool feature loco

Chill man, I was joking, I didn't take it seriously.   Wink

I'm cool, I think I misinterpreted you then.

Who's talking about trucks disappearing?  Trucks are highly useful utility vehicles, but we're not talking about trucks here.   And if you haven't been paying attention, SUVs based on trucks are disappearing.  That's a fact.  And it won't take our lifetime to see them go away or be reduced to a niche vehicle again.

Remember the article was about mid size sedans, not trucks or suvs.  Even if, as you say, truck based suvs are disappearing, mid size sedans are not.   Ever.

What's ironic is you condemn sub-compacts as death traps, yet you endorse motorcycles which take everything you attack a Smart car for from a safety perspective and just amp it up, lol.

No, there's no irony here you've been paying attention.  You don't see people advertising motorcycles to be as safe as a regular car, do you?  That's the issue here.  Smart cars and people on the subcompact kool aid buy their cars thinking they're as safe as an Accord.  They trumpet they don't need big cars, because a Yaris is perfectly safe and goo enough, etc.

But they're not.  They're death traps.

Haha
It's definetely a problem here
People buy SUVs even if dont need one
It's like: "...Oh, i have a kid now, let me switch to SUV, my mid-size sedan does not have enough space..."
I'm not even talking about those who make trips from gas stations to Wendys as HD said, and use their gaslers only for that

When i was driving in Rome, Italy i realized that my car was one of the "SUV" there
Anything there was smaller than my 335i  Grin
Whole Europe is on much smaller cars on average compared to US

So people buy SUVs they don't need?  Who are you to judge?  Would you like people complaining about your car because it's unnecessarily powerful, a waste of fuel and natural resources?  That can happen.

Also there are many reasons why cars in Europe are smaller in size: they tax engines bigger than 1.4L, fuel there is 8-10 dollars per gallon, city roads can be much more cramped.  So their choices are limited.

Not one has to do with them being smarter.

Longer commutes mean you stay in the car for longer, people tend to need cupholders more.  Try to find the typical 2h comute in SF, LA, Houston in Europe?  You won't.

And don't even mention the poorly engineered cup holders from European cars.  They're joke: you can fit a bottle of water or certain large cups (they're meant for soda cans mostly) they break, they spill on you expensive dash, and you usually have to buy aftermarket ones for the rear passengers...LOL

They do.
Some people buy SUV just because they like height of the ride or because they think it's safer, not for certain needs

Yes, my car is powerful, but with 34mpg highway @ 60mph
How's that a waste?
At least it's not a gasler and bests most cars in the same category

P.S. I'm actually worried when i see car simillar to yours in crappy winter conditions (especially driven by woman)
If that thing hits you, it's game-over
I see a lot of SUVs in the ditches every time it snows or rains
Also, these are the cars that usually put damage on your car during parking
They back into you, crack your bumper or headlight, or just damage your grill with tow hitch

LOL
Do you really need 20 cupholders for 2-hr trip?
Thats like 5 gallons of liquid
I wanna see you last that long without a stop for restroom
You only need few cupholders to have enough water/juice etc

Me and my wife are perfectly fine with 2 out of 4 total in the car, even on 5hr trips

I took a ride in my friends Mazda minivan and was amaized how many of cupholders were there
I just think it's overkill
Replace some of them with something usefull, that's all i'm saying

You got on the truck soapbox, not me.  I was responding to your comment.

Go by the data reported.  IIHS reported that the Smart car got great marks in front and side impact ratings.  So people jumped on that.  IIHS is very lax at testing between different classes.  Like why are they just testing this now, when the car has been on the market for over a year?

And I'm not here to support the Smart, but small cars are only an issue when you have people driving heavy, oversized vehicles, and vice versa.  Utilitarian and heavy don't have to be related, but with most cars, they are.  I'm just an advocate of lighter cars, because most cars are way too heavy IMO, regardless of their size.

I could drive a Lotus, nowhere near the size of a Smart, but nearly as light.  That car is taking a beating if its hit by a 5000 lb SUV, but we're not condemning the Elise too. Smiley

I actually saw the whole 'Smart' article today on msn or something like that. Only got time to take a quick glance at it. The "results" are not the least but surprising, obviously. The (smart) cars are tiny, along with the prius and toyota yaris, etc, that they tested. I dont think any of the cars did amazingly well. It actually made me think a bit in my head about my IS being so much smaller than the M was...
