Study: People Putting an Extra 50,000 Miles Or More On Their Cars
« on: February 19, 2010, 01:53:35 PM »

Money quote:

Quote
Considering the average American racks up between 12,000 and 15,000 miles per year, this means people plan on keeping their cars an extra 3-4 years. Why? Well there are plenty of reasons if you really stop and think about it.

For one, the quality of cars today is much better than the quality of cars from say, the 1990’s. Without making too much of a sweeping generalization, many cars from that era seemed more prone to breakdowns and reliability issues. If you go back forty years, many cars were barely making it to 50,000 miles before needing a major overhaul like a new engine (I’ve seen lots of muscle cars whose odometers were just 5-digits). In fact, 56% of those surveyed plan to drive their current car until it completely dies.

Then there is the obvious reality of a new financial climate. Many people seem to be willing to take a step back and reconsider what is important in life. Do I really need a brand new car, right now, even though my current car is still running? Many people would rather repair their cars right now, because no matter how you cut it, it is almost always cheaper to keep an old car on the road than replace it with something new (unless you are replacing your transmission on a monthly basis).

Another big reason may also be that people realize we are reaching the apex of a car revolution. Electric and plug-in electric cars are on the cusp of making a mass-market emergence. While not everyone can afford to be an early adopter, in five years time there will be plenty of electric vehicles to choose from, as well as an emerging market for used EV’s. So why not hold on to that old car a little longer when your next car might not need gas at all?

Well, I plan on keeping the Sequoia for at least 10years, or more.  Best car I ever owned.

I'm pretty happy with the FX too, and I can see keeping her some extra 3-4 years of life.  It's more likely I buy a small one than trade this one in.

Doesn't mean I agree 100% with the study.  Not sure how it accounts for all the leased cars though.  People who like to change cars every year usually lease I reckon.

We will definitely be upgrading our '05 (built in '04) Odyssey (97k) for the one that just debuted in Chicago.

I still love my '06 (built in '05) M (73k). The new one needs to be phenomenal for me to trade her in.

Yikes! Hide the women and children! Cover your eyes!

People who think the Acura TL is ugly need look no further than this shoebox. Sweet mother of mercy.  sFun_eyescan

Oh, uh ... just my humble opinion, of course.

Back on topic, I can't remember any car I've kept more than 3 years since the 1960's. I can't even imagine looking at the same instrument panel for longer than that. And since we're a consumption economy, it sure ain't gonna help the struggling car industry if people are keeping their cars 3 or 4 more years. Guess it's a good thing China is buying lots of Buicks.

One thing with Vans is that they're underpowered.  They need turbo or V8 badly.  Europeans got great engines in their wagons, we should bring some of those ideas and put them on Vans.  An Odyssey with the 380hp/400ft would be interesting.

Frankly, I don't care much for how a family car looks, you're mostly driving it anyway.  If it's practical, and interesting to drive (for whatever reason), I like it.

I used to change cars a lot too, I barely kept the M for a year, but since playing with computers, I don't care much for things like instrument panel and gadgets.  I wouldn't buy a car based on that, computers give me so much more.  As long as there's no major mechanical improvement in the Sequoia, I don't see a reason to trade yet.  Will see what happens.

The FX is simply the most beautiful and unique car ever made, so although I like the new model, I feel the old one is superior.  It still feels like a futuristic prototype (for me) after all those years.  I hate those (new)retro cars, and the FX is the best medicine.  Grin

i guess i've become domesticated... but as far as vans go, that one looks badass.  I thought the new sienna looked pretty sweet, but next to that odessy, it looks like crap, lol. But we all know as far as minivans go, its whats INSIDE that counts right?

One of the finest posts I've read in a while.  Perhaps the 1st gen FX is the only vehicle worthy of keeping an extra few miles.Cheesy
