thoughts on next car....
« on: January 21, 2009, 02:12:38 PM »

Not for me but for wife.... currently have the Merc R350, actually got to like the car, two minor problems over 2.5 years (knock on wood) one was a faulty wire in the tail lights, the other was something else (forgot!!)  but over all, although I was against a merc, it was is a pretty sweet ride.  We have the Saks 5th version so its pretty loaded, 19s w/ sport 5 spoke wheels, suede leather seats (farkin nice), carbon trim and other "crap"

looking for other SUVs (or mini van...hehehehe) but wanted to know if any of you have any expereice with other SUVs...

BMW X5 (read Ozs review)
BMW X6 (probably not practical)
Cayenne
Audi Q7
Ford geo
CLS63 (hehehehe)

all the cars would be the 6 cyl version....

thanks

V6?   WHY?   lol

No experience in any... I'd check out the Q7 just because it is more practical than the others, and IMO better looking.

What Edmunds.com says

A combination of luxury features, excellent build quality and a smart-looking interior make the 2009 Audi Q7 a solid choice for a five- or seven-passenger luxury crossover SUV. However, the Q7 isn't the quickest or roomiest crossover on the block.

Pros

Athletic handling on air-suspension-equipped models, high-tech luxury and safety features, superior interior design and craftsmanship, available diesel model.

Cons

Heavy curb weight hampers acceleration and fuel economy, cramped third-row seat, no factory rear-seat entertainment system.

What's New for 2009

For 2009, Audi debuts the diesel-powered Q7 TDI, which will be available later in the year. Other Q7 models are unchanged, save for some feature and trim level updates: The base 3.6 gets a standard premium sound system, a trip computer, telescoping sun visors and satellite radio. Also, Audi's MMI control interface is now optional on that model. Standard front parking sensors are dropped from the midlevel Premium trim. Q7s with the 4.2-liter V8 engine receive a cleaner ULEV tailpipe emission rating and see a slight improvement in fuel economy. The Prestige trim on the 4.2 model gets voice recognition and a blind-spot warning system.

If I were you, and concerned about mpg... I'd check out the TDI, but not sure when you're lease expires.  The one in my pic is a diesel, but a V12 diesel, lol.

thats stock for that particular model...

While we were playing with Audi's smaller V8-powered diesel Q7 (thanks to the folks at Honeywell), it looks like the multi-ringed brand was working on taking the rocket-powered powerhouse of an SUV to a whole new oil-burning level with the new Audi Q7 V12 TDI. With the new bigger, longer and more uncut diesel engine under the hood it officially makes the new Q7 the most powerful diesel-powered passenger vehicle around. That big 6.0-liter engine generates a whopping 500 HP and (wait for it) an astonishing 757.5 lb-ft of torque. That means the new Q7 has a 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) time of just 5.5 seconds. On average, it requires just 11.9 liters of fuel per 100 km — a figure translating to roughly 19.77 MPG. Do want. Oh yes, definitely do want. Presales of the Audi Q7 V12 TDI will begin in Germany during the second half of 2008 and we're of the assumption people will be calling it a 2009 model.

http://jalopnik.com/photogallery/2009AudiQ7V12TDI/1000842727

Pre-orders for the Q7 V12 TDI will begin in the second half of 2008. It’s not known when deliveries will begin, nor is it clear when Audi will announce pricing. U.S. availability also remains a mystery.

The SUV comes equipped with a 6.0-liter engine similar to the one featured in R10 Le Mans racing car. It produces 500 horsepower and 758 pound-feet of torque (1000 Nm). The crossover is capable of hitting 62 mph in 5.5 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155 mph. Maximum torque is available from just 1,750 rpm.

Unlike other Audi V-engines, this model features a special cylinder angle of 60 degrees. The twin-turbo V12 TDI conforms to the Euro 5 emissions class which should come into force in 2010. Fuel economy is estimated at nearly 20 mpg.

A six-speed automatic is the standard transmission. The Q7 V12 TDI rides on a high-tech aluminum chassis with double wishbone front and rear suspension. The air shock absorbers have three settings ranging from extremely comfortable to highly sporty. The driver can also adjust ground clearance in five stages via this system and lower the tail end by 2.8 inches for comfortable loading.

The stylish wheels — available in 10 spoke 20-inch or 20-spoke 21-inch — house large ceramic carbon-fiber discs and powerful brake calipers.

Daytime running lights consisting of twelve white LEDs per headlight and are located on the upper edge of the air intake slots, replacing the turn signals that were moved to the bi-xenon headlights.

Interior enhancements include plenty of shiny aluminum inserts and optional wood trim. Notably, the air vents are made from aluminum and the pedals from stainless steel, giving the SUV a slightly more exotic look inside. The 195 mph speedometer also contributes to this feel.

Other luxury features include Verano leather seats, ambient lighting, black roof lining, navigation, MMI, a large glass roof, and the Audi parking system with a rearview camera.

Curious -

How come you're ditching the R350?  End of lease and change of scenery?

Then - my thoughts;

X5 - completely overrated and overpriced. Doesn't mean you and your wife won't love it though. It rides very nicely and the V6 is surprisingly "competent"; the overall quality of the car is pretty disappointing though.
X6 - "Bleh"
Cayenne - Only worth it if you go V8/turbo, I think. I also don't think the cargo room in it is that outstanding? It's on par with the FX35/FX50 (why arent those on your list?!)
Q7 - same as cayenne. Too much weight for a V6, I think. Also, I was actually talking to one of my coworkers about this (Q7) today. His girlfriend has apparently owned 3 audis and each one of them has suffered numerous issues (i have no idea why she keeps buying them, that's a different topic). I think the Q7 looks great, but you'd definitely have to review the reliability.

What about:
+Lexus GX470
+Lexus RX350
+Infiniti FX35

When I was shopping for the Sequoia, we hop inside the 08 GX470 just to check it out.  When my wife saw the tape deck on the console she said "What??  THAT tells me everything I'd should know about this Lexus "tech package":  It's lacking already".  LOL  The LX570 has much improved electronics, but it's in another league price wise.

Why does Lexus still has a tape deck?  I wonder what else on the Lexus line still has them.
