Tire Decision
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:44:09 PM »

So as you know, if you've read the 07G35S Quest Thread, you know that my original tire plans fell through for tomorrow, so I thought I'd do some more in depth exploration into tire choices, and I've narrowed it down to a few tires I can assuredly get within the next few days.

So what I'm looking for here is any personal experience you have with the tires listed (good or bad) to help assist in making the decision.  So here they are, in no particular order:

Sumitomo HTR Z III @ 778 shipped

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's @ 800 shipped

Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport ~ 205 per before tax/fees from local tire shop.

Other choices out there in the same price range:

Yokohama S.drive @ 700 shipped

Kuhmo Ecsta SPT ~ 725 shipped

A few of the Z guys are running the Sumitomo's and have nothing but good things to say.  Sean is running Vredestein and really likes them.  No long term data on treadwear available as they are both relatively new to the scene.  Personally, I like the idea of new and cutting edge... but I also like the comfort of knowing I'm using a tried and tested product with results to reflect upon.

Thoughts?  Concerns?  Suggestions?

ahahahaha... well if my friend whom I will link to both threads... had the bridgestones in stock, you can believe tomorrow at this time you'd be seeing pics of the Works with Potenzas.  But since he didn't... now I get to go into WMD style evaluation of the situation!

I have the Falken FK452s on my wheels, and although they're not the best tires on the planet, they're the only one that is priced well per performance.  They're still designed and manufactured in Japan, and they're a top choice for most people running staggered offsets due to their prices...

I'm currently running 245/35 R20 and 275/30 R20.

Just a thought...  You might want to contact Jimmy too...  I think hes got the hook on Nittos...  Check out the INVOs if you got the time, they're pretty sick tires...

For what you have listed, I would go with the Potenzas or the Vredestein. I haven't had the Vredesteins but for the guys who do, they like them. I can't say personally how they rate. If you could squeeze a couple hundred more I would choose the Michelin PS2s...but thats if you are willing to spend more. I know you just dropped some moolah on the wheels themselves...but they are Works and you gotta wrap them nicely! The only hang up I have on the Potenzas are the treadwear. They don't last for anything. The Continental Contact 2's are close to the PS2s but a little cheaper. They come factory on Porsches.

I'm still waiting to see how they hold up long term, but so far I wouldn't buy PS2's again because of the great performance of the Vredesteins so far.  For the cost of the PS2s, I can almost buy 2 sets of the Vredesteins.  And I really liked my PS2's, I'm just totally impressed by the Vreds.

I wouldn't run Nittos even if they were given to me for free. Smiley
