no plans to sell in the U.S. (yet)

All the toys are present: push-button start, a console-mounted control interface for the in-car systems, classy wood accents, upmarket switchgear, and even Grey Poupon snack trays for the rear passengers. Oh, those
rear passengers get massaging back seats
, as well. It's very impressive looking and it stinks of quality. If Hyundai ever decides to gamble and attack the next price segment up from the Genesis sedan, they clearly have the ammo to do so.

If it's not US destined, where exactly do they intend on selling it?

Hyundai’s $50,000 Puzzle: How to Sell New Luxury Car
April 17 (Bloomberg) -- Hyundai Motor Co. Chairman Chung Mong Koo insisted the revamped Equus luxury sedan meet all regulations in the U.S., where Hyundai’s flagship has never been sold. Now the U.S. unit has to figure out how to sell a car that costs as much as eight times more than its Accent compacts.
“The person who just spent $40,000 or $50,000 on a vehicle doesn’t want to sit in the dealer’s service drive next to a kid in his Accent,” said Eric Noble, president of Car Lab, an Orange, California-based consulting firm for automakers. “A level of social stratification is expected.”
Equus, a status symbol in Hyundai’s home market, is unknown to U.S. carbuyers who view Hyundai as a maker of vehicles that sell for less than those of Japanese and U.S. rivals. Still, just as Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus and Honda Motor Co.’s Acura began winning sales from General Motors Corp.’s Cadillac and Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz in the late 1980s, Hyundai wants a share of the U.S. luxury market to enhance its image and profit.
South Korea’s largest automaker will decide this year whether to bring Equus to the U.S., said John Krafcik, president of its U.S. sales company, in an April 9 interview from the New York International Auto Show, where the V-8 engine sedan is on display. The car went on sale in Hyundai’s home market in March, priced from $48,100 to $79,000 at current exchange rates.
“We are honestly thinking about it,” Krafcik said. The company is already building experience with premium customers from its Genesis sedan that went on sale in the U.S. last year, he said.
Hyundai’s Sales
Hyundai, bucking the worst U.S. auto market since the early 1980s, had a 0.5 percent U.S. sales gain in the first quarter, while Toyota’s plummeted 37 percent and Honda’s fell 35 percent.
The company is benefiting from higher incentives, increased advertising, fleet sales and a marketing campaign begun in January offering to take back vehicles from customers who can’t make payments because they’ve lost a job.
Hyundai’s improving outlook led Group 1 Automotive Inc., owner of 100 dealerships, to buy a Hyundai store in Houston on April 14, the retailer’s first for the brand in a large U.S. city, said Pete DeLongchamps, a Group 1 vice president.
“They’ve got great products and one of the few brands that’s enjoying positive sales growth right now,” DeLongchamps said.
Hyundai rose 1.1 percent to close at 65,300 won in Seoul trading, bringing year-to-date gains to 65 percent.
Genesis ‘Halo’
Hyundai touts the Genesis as equaling the performance of the Lexus GS and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s 5-Series, and sells the model for at least $10,000 less than the two rival sedans.
“It has delivered a halo effect for the brand,” said Krafcik. “Equus could build on that.”
Unlike Toyota and Honda, which sell their luxury models through separate dealerships, Hyundai may either offer Equus to all U.S. dealers that want it or to only those with the best sales and highest quality service, Krafcik said. Starting a stand-alone luxury network would be difficult during the current slump as dealers would have trouble getting financing, he said.
“That would be a terrible idea,” said Rick Case, who owns six Hyundai dealerships in Florida, Georgia and Ohio. “In this market, no dealer could afford it.”
Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Case said Genesis is attracting luxury buyers because it isn’t a well-known premium vehicle, a benefit amid the current recession.
Known Brands
“People are telling me they don’t want to be seen in a Mercedes, a BMW, a Lexus right now, because of the economy,” Case said. “It doesn’t look good to be laying people off, and then getting some kind of name luxury vehicle.”
Hyundai sold 3,945 Genesis sedans in the first quarter of 2009, an incremental gain since the model didn’t go on sale in the U.S. until June 2008. Still, the number contrasts with the market’s 38 percent plunge in first-quarter luxury vehicle sales, according sales tracker Autodata Corp.
“Luxury is rarified territory,” said Michael Robinet, an auto industry analyst for CSM Worldwide in Northville, Michigan. “It will take a while to build a capability on the retailing side.”
The risk in adding Equus in Hyundai’s U.S. showrooms is repeating Volkswagen AG’s experience with the Phaeton, introduced in 2003. Sales peaked at 1,939 in 2004 dropping to just 17 by 2007 as buyers balked at paying more than $60,000 for a Volkswagen-badged sedan.
Hyundai’s quality ranking also lags behind Lexus, the most dependable auto brand in the U.S., according to J.D. Power & Associates.
“In the mind of the American buyer, brands are only elastic to a certain point, then they snap back -- think VW with the Phaeton,” said CarLab’s Noble. “A premium vehicle is about more than just the car. It’s the whole experience.”

First impression on the Equus (
PopMech
):
Quote
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Recently Hyundai announced that in 2010 it will begin to sell the high-end Equus luxury sedan stateside. This announcement follows what has already been a busy two-year period at the company that has ushered in a pair of world-class cars. In 2008, the Hyundai Genesis debuted, a luxury sedan that costs thousands less than its competitors. That car was so good, it was named the 2009 North American Car of the Year. Next, the company rolled out the Genesis Coupe, a wildly entertaining, sporty car that offers either turbocharged or V6 power, rear-wheel drive and capability nearly equal to more expensive Japanese rivals. Next comes the Equus, which will slot above the Genesis in price, size and performance. Details are slim at this point, but based on its past strategy, we expect Hyundai to offer features and accommodations similar to the Lexus LS460, but at a price well below that car's $64,000 sticker. Recently we took a very brief drive in a Korean-spec car. Let's see how it stacks up. —Larry Webster
The Specs
The Equus has been Hyundai's flagship in Korea since 1999. But last year, the car was redesigned around the new Genesis architecture. The new car was shown at this year's New York Auto Show and was then taken to select dealers to gauge the public's reaction to a CEO-class Hyundai.
Apparently, the reception was favorable enough that the company decided to adapt the car to the U.S. Undoubtedly, the car's design had a major impact in the positive reviews. Styling is always subjective, but many of the lines on the Equus mimic the handsome Azera sedan. Its size and prominent, flowing, body side crease lend the car a presence that looks good in the metal.
The rear-drive Genesis chassis was stretched 4.3 inches to enlarge the rear -seat legroom. Overall length is up by 7.2 inches to 203.1 inches. Width and height are up less than an inch. Like the Genesis, control arms connect the body to the front wheels, a multilink system does the job in the rear. The Equus, however, has adjustable air springs and shocks at all four corners.
Behind the sloping, toothy grill resides the 4.6-liter V8 from the Genesis. In the Genesis, the double-overhead cam engine makes 375 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque when run on premium fuel. It's likely that the Equus will have a bit more power, and we've also heard that a 5.0-liter version of this engine will be available with somewhere near 420 hp. Backed by a six-speed automatic transmission, the over-two-ton Equus should run to 60 mph in under 6 seconds.
Like the Genesis, a full compliment of luxury features and new tech will be part of the deal. Expect heated and cooled seats front and rear, auto door closers, a high-end stereo, navigation, Blueooth connectivity. Electronic driver aids include adaptive headlights, lane-departure assist (when the car drifts out of the lane, the seat belt tugs the driver), stability control, radar-based cruise control, and likely a parking-assist system too. In other words, the full monte. We also wouldn't be surprised if the car offers massaging front seats like those in the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class.
The Drive
From the driver's seat, the Equus feels a lot like the Genesis, which is no real surprise since they share an architecture. The suspension and steering tuning is quite a bit different, however. In the Equus, the steering effort stays relatively light no matter how fast the car is going, while the feedback from Genesis wheel gets heavier with speed. With either setup, the feel is quite good, but considering the comfortable cruising mission of the Equus, we actually prefer its steering feel.
Bumps, pothole patches, frost heaves, and anything that might upset lesser cars—the Equus takes them all in stride. Impacts are barely audible and the structure feels rock solid. It was raining when we drove the car, so it was impossible to make a good judgment on the interior noise level, but it felt quite serene inside.
The 4.6-liter V8 has plenty of power. It's smooth, and nearly transparent in most of its operations. However we noticed an abrupt throttle tip-in that made leaving stoplights smoothly a bit tricky.
That was the only flaw we could uncover. We spend some time in the car's huge rear seat. That rear-seat bottom cushion is higher than those in the front seats, so it's almost like theater seating. There's legroom to spare, even for this six-footer, and the rear passengers have plenty of buttons to press. The rear bench is split 60/40 and each portion has its own adjustment for seatback angle and fore and aft position. As we mentioned, the seats are heated and cooled, but there's also a handy foldable tray nestled in the seatback of the front passenger seat.
Hyundai pointed out that the car we drove did not have the final U.S. chassis tuning or a complete roster of interior features. But from our short drive, the potential is clearly impressive.
The Bottom Line
It's too early to say if the Equus will top the Lexus LS460 or Mercedes Benz S Class. But we think it's in the hunt—and that's a major achievement for Hyundai. The only thing it's missing is, of course, the premium image. High-dollar sedan buyers invariably are making a statement with their purchase, and the question is, does this new Hyundai have enough cachet to get these well-heeled buyers into dealers? We'll have to wait to find out.

To much wood on the dash. That just ruins the interior. The Genesis dash looks
better with the leather on dash. The exterior pics at the auto show looks
better also.

Yeah, I agree with you on the dash ^^^
The huge plank of wood on the passenger side is kind of odd, specially that it appears to be too shiny. It has no depth to the grain, apparently.

Yeah way to shiny. A few wood trim pieces here and there would of been ok, but this
car has way to much.

a flat (non-shiny) wood pkg like the M has probably would have been nice if they were going to use that much.

I hate matte (flat, non-shiny) wood finish
I also agree on "too-big" piece of wood
Texture (pattern) of the wood should be changed as well
Otherwise it's a decent car
Too bad you cant touch or feel what materials are used on the interior

I used to like shiny wood better in cars until I seen the non shiny wood
in the M and G35 cars. I think the flat non shiny wood looks
more expensive also.

The rear looks like a A6/550/LS430(tips) The front logo..? C'mon we aren't a Chinese ambassador or anything, hopefully that won't make it over... I also hope the wood package is an option like you guys stated. Apart from that it looks to be on par with lexus from what I can SEE. Looks can fool you though, just step into a new cts...
