ZR1 details released
« on: May 11, 2008, 11:33:49 PM »

If you're bummed you didn't get your order in for the 2008 Nissan GT-R, you still have another chance to grab another supercar in the form of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. But you better act fast. Just as the GT-R was limited to a finite number of examples worldwide, General Motors will only produce 2,000 ZR1s annually for the global market.

It remains unclear home many of those ZR1s will be staying in the U.S. — we expect the majority of them — but the Bow Tie division's supercar should begin rolling off the assembly line floor this summer.

Tadge Juechter, the Corvette ZR1's chief engineer, revealed this tidbit about the ZR1, as well as a couple of other factoids in a recent live chat on GMnext.com.

Juechter also circled around the ZR1's fuel economy, but never gave any exact figures. However, Juechter still says that the ZR1 will be the most fuel-efficient 600 horsepower car on the market and that he expects EPA ratings to be somewhat less than a Z06. He also added that ZR1 buyers should be prepared to pay a small gas-guzzler tax.

No official word yet on the car's pricing, but it's widely believed the ZR1's price will hover around $100,000. Juechter says GM is "strongly encouraging dealers to charge MSRP," but price gouging will likely push the ZR1's price tag well north of $100,000.

And ZR1 owners need not worry — Juechter says that the ZR1's unique features, such as the car's carbon-ceramic brakes and Michelin tires, will not be available on lesser 'Vettes' option lists.

On the development side of the car, Juechter says that all-wheel drive was never considered for the ZR1 as it "would have added too much mass." He noted that the car's power to weight ratio is one of the factors that makes it perform as well as it does.

As for a C7 version of the ZR1, nothing is set in stone. GM engineers will definitely consider the performance model, but with CAFE regulations among other factors, it's impossible to guarantee.

All the ZR1's mysteries should be solved soon, though, as pricing and EPA ratings are expected to be released within the next two months.

This morning General Motors released all the official numbers for the 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 including its price ($103,000), 0-60 mph time (3.4 sec), quarter-mile (11.3 sec at 131 mph) and top speed (205 mph). It's the fastest, most powerful and most expensive vehicle GM has ever built. So how does it get built? Why, at the Corvette's Bowling Green production facility in Kentucky. Put together by the same people who lovingly assemble your garden variety Vettes, the ZR1 is nevertheless a very difficult vehicle than the bang-for-the-buck coupe on which it's based. Watch the video after the jump to see a ZR1 go from a frame to full-fledged supercar in about four and a half minutes of time lapsed video interspersed with interviews of the plant workers who have the privilege of assembling this King of Corvettes.

Ahhh, GM you truly have some questionable people at the top.  The problem with the ZR1 is NOT the engine.  or the suspension.  or the steering (well, I wouldve liked that a bit more crisp actually but I digress). or the looks (still think too much going on in the back that's a sylistic thing).  The problem is literally everything else.  You name it, it's cheap.  Seats? Bleah, Electronics? Bleah,  Layout? Double Bleah, Dashboard? Triple Bleah, materials and finish? Bleah bleah bleah.  I'll see if I have any pictures of the fabric puppet show wall that comes with the car that supposedly seperates the driver/passenger area from the hatchback.  It's very literally a piece of black fabric that doesn't even tie down, it just hangs like a puppet show.  I kept waiting for Elmo to pop out while I was driving.  Anyways, I feel like GM never learns.  I can see the boardroom now:
"Hmmm Bob, sales of the ZR-1 seem to be leveling off.  Customers say they don't like the interior and silly things like electrically opened doors with a mechanical opening lever below the seat.  I know what to do!  We'll make it faster!"

I agree with you Trin....

Typical with most American made cars.  The interior is blah, styling, ok.  However, overall you will get your bang for your buck with a Vette.

The problem with the ZR1 is that it's just a Z06 with a few "cutesy" items to add an additional $40k.  For the money, I would buy the Z06 over the ZR1.  The Z06 is exclusive enough for me.

I just don't feel like the car is very usable.  If I was ponying up that money for something, I'd either buy a Z06 and add $30k in work, or for similar money, buy an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi R8 or Porsche GT3 to get more than enough performance but that added sex appeal the Vette sorely lacks.

What's with the non uniform roof?

When you don't paint the carbon fiber it makes it the engine run cooler, more aerodynamic and adds 10 hp.

Lets not forget the 5 oz of weight you add. Cheesy

I wonder if GM will ever do in the US what they did in Europe.  Corvette is it's own brand there.  It is sold mostly in association with Cadillac dealerships, similar to Pontiac / GMC.  I know they did it because they really wanted to keep the Corvette away from the stigma of the low cost Chevy's they sell there, and by pairing it with Cadillac, try to market it as a bit more upscale to compete.

With a car like the ZR1, the Chevy association seems to hurt it more than anything.  If it were its own brand, the ZR1 could be made a bit high upscale on the interior without everybody going into shock over a $125k Chevy.  I also look at it, if Corvette is its own brand but shared with Cadillac, most Caddy dealers have more money to spend than Chevy ones.  Their techs are used to working on higher end vehicles and a ZR1 doesn't seem quite as out of place surrounded by Cadillacs V-Series, compared to Chevy's SS lineup.

I remember similar thoughts about bringing your 75k GT-R into the Nissan dealership... people just thought the clientele would fit in a little better at the Infiniti place when it came time for service

At about 2:21 in the video they interview a gent named Kevin.  Anyways, anyone notice the carbon fiber B pillar?  or maybe the actual roof panel is carbon fiber?
