A face only a mother could love, 2009 Acura TL.
« on: July 13, 2008, 12:40:28 PM »

The 2009 Acura TL is coming this fall, and Acura has released the first official image of the car. Acura's love-it-or-hate-it new shield-grille face is affixed to the front end of the new sedan, which also sports thin, slanted headlamps and a pair of angular lower intakes. A pronounced accent line sweeps down from back to front, where it leads directly into a very pronounced wheel arch. Looks like we'll have to wait a little longer to see the car's posterior.

Disappointing. I was waiting for the day they debuted the AWD TL as it would have been a consideration to me vs the G/IS; but with a face that ugly.. I dont think so.

Yep, they've graced the whole line with that god-awful grille. It's tolerable on the TSX, since it's an angular, edgy style, but it just plain sucks with the more flowing styling of the RL and the TL. It begs the question "What the hell were they thinking?"

Whenever I look at the front end, all I can think of is a parrotfish, which has a beak like that.

I'm pretty confident this was their inspiration.  Roll Eyes

To each their own. Like Mike said, it looks okay on the TSX.. but is not at home on the RL or TL.

not a huge fan... if only it was matte black that'd be badass.  The rest of it looks really cool though, and there's always aftermarket.

If they DO drop the 3.7-liter and SH-AWD in, they're going to be in a similar boat to the new RL ... EPA ratings that have sagged to 16/22. IOW, abysmal.

The 3.7 is a pretty gutsy engine, but unfortunately it's also thirsty, and the AWD just absorbs some more gas. IMO, Acura is going the wrong way ... rather than give up on FWD, they're trying to band-aid it with their SH-AWD system. It's a good system, but it adds expense, frictional losses, and complexity, and lowers the already low mileage ratings even further.

Acura : Give it up ... people south of the Mason-Dixon don't want the expense, complexity and reduced economy of AWD. So go to RWD like the rest of the near-lux market. FWD is for econocars. A RWD TL with better build quality than the last-gen, a better grille, and a good direct-injection V-6 would give the Infiniti G a run for its money and even steal sales from the Camry-based Lexus ES350.

Acura TLs are front wheel heavy, like the Audis, only worse: 61/39, according to this:

Well yeah everything is in the front... there's no way for them to offset that weight in the back without intentionally weighing down the trunk.  I suspect the AWD helps some but not a lot.

I made some enemies on the TL forums when I described my '06 TL's handling and steering as "truckish", but I was only being honest. It was extremely front-heavy ... to me, far more so than my '04 Maxima (also FWD).

And these guys thought they had a real zoom-zoom sporty car.  loco

Now, my '06 RL felt FAR more neutral, I guess partly because of the SH-AWD, but it also just had better front-rear weight bias.

Well Acura is like what all honda civic drivers aspire for, so you have to keep that in context, lol
