New VW Phaeton - Sign Recognition, Google Integration and more...
« on: June 05, 2010, 06:08:45 PM »

This thing is pretty nuts...

http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publish/article_2722.shtml

Quote
Road sign recognition: However the latest generation Phaeton’s information and entertainment system can do even more! By virtue of the camera integrated in the rear-view mirror the Phaeton now detects road signs and shows the relevant information on the system’s touchscreen and/or the multifunction display (between speedometer and rev counter). It displays not only the maximum permitted speed but also any important additional information (e.g. ‘10pm - 6am’ or ‘When wet’). The system will also be able to alert drivers to overtaking restrictions – the first vehicle in the world to do so!

Quote
Use of online services: Volkswagen is for the first time offering an Internet-based Google function in the new Phaeton as a map display add-on for the RNS 810 radio navigation system with 30-gigabyte hard drive. The relevant data gets loaded onto the system over the Internet via mobile telephone and a proxy server specially set up for the purpose. The visualisation on the touchscreen’s display is the same as the Google Maps ‘Satellite’ view familiar from the conventional Internet and equivalent to the iPhone’s ‘Hybrid’ view. In the Phaeton the satellite images naturally get supplemented by the navigation system’s appropriately highlighted route recommendation.

Quote
Dynamic Light Assist in detail: Volkswagen is introducing for the Phaeton a new optional camera-based main beam control system called Dynamic Light Assist, which represents a major technical innovation in passive safety. Linked in with a camera integrated behind the windscreen the system keeps the main beam modules of the standard Bi-Xenon headlamps permanently on. It merely masks the areas of each beam that it calculates could potentially disturb other road users. For the driver this means appreciably more light, clearly enhanced safety and a more relaxing drive. The function is achieved by an additional aperture between the reflector holding the Xenon bulb and the lens. Combined with an intelligent, lateral tilting of the complete module (via the cornering light function) and individual control of the left and right headlights, this additional aperture arrangement enables the light source to be masked only in those areas that could otherwise cause other motorists to be dazzled.

I hate to say it, but didn't VW already fail at this once? Sad The technology is neat, but...

If there's one thing (and there's way more) is that vehicle technology is "progressing" but still has a LONG way to go.

i think these are all really neat ideas.  Not sure how effective it will be in this first application, but as computers get smarter, nice to see some of that IQ has made it into the vehicle.

It's a helluva automobile-but it's a Volkswagen & on the outside it looks like a Volkswagen. If these machines sold solely because of their killer features, the Phaeton was way ahead years ago, but didn't sell. When you want a luxury machine, you also want to be seen in a luxury machine. Who wants to be seen in a Volkswagen?

Your right,
This is why it didn't sell in North America.  Because here its more about status than the car.  There were a few other issues like limited dealer support and more importantly, its more distinguished cousin, the A8.  For that reason they decided to introduce the new model in China, where a Buick is THE car to have.  I'm assuming VAG is using this car as a test bed due to its lower production numbers.  Then once tested in the field, things will start trickling down to Porsche and Audi?  Who knows...??

It's a funny thing, but so much is about perception, not substance. It's no wonder my oldest opted for an attorney rather than a psychologist. With so many easily fooled by their obsession w/perception, no substance is easily pandered on the unsuspecting, only too late discovered and then an attorney feeding frenzy ensues.

You know, aside from the fact that the thing is butt-ugly, it's sterile on the inside and undoubtedly overpriced if it's like the last one, it's also eminently uninteresting.  loco

There will always be those (cough cough) that swear a 328 is better because its a BMW, regardless of the tech and engine.  I on the other hand think its nice, I just don't really want a VW.

So, it's a VW with several Audi features and probably an Audi price tag, it reads roadsigns just in case you can't read, it's bland to look at on the outside. plain ugly on the inside, seats four?, and comes with an R2 unit between the two rear seats.  Sounds like a real weiner to me.
