2008 M35 killed ipod at first use !
« on: June 05, 2011, 08:51:59 AM »

Hello, I bought a used 08 M35 with tech/nav. I am using what I assume is the factory ipod interface cable.

Yesterday I tried connecting an ipod for the first time. When I plugged an ipod in and had the system set to use the ipod input, the system never recognized the attached ipod. It always said no ipod connected.

I tried with a 4th gen "classic" 20gb with the correct firmware, and a touch (few years old, unknown firmware). Both ipods worked fine before connecting to the car. The older classic still works fine by itself or in a dock in the house. The ipod touch is completely bricked and unresponsive. Tried it by itself, on a dock, attached to a computer, etc.

Anyone else ever have this happen? The car is still under the factory warranty until mid December. I assume I can take it in and have this checked out under warranty...

Sorry to hear. I'd focus on recovering your ipod first. Have you put it into DFU mode? Let me know if you need directions. But most 'bricked' ipods/iphones are recoverable.

I have tried getting to dfu mode, but the ipod doesn't respond at all, itunes never sees it, etc.  Maybe I'll take it into the apple store and see if they can figure anything out...  Not sure what else to do.

reset the ipod.  The problem was probably the cable.  Believe it or not, the cable for older ipods does NOT work for the newer ones.  For example, I used the plug from an old IPod and plugged in my newer touch and it reset my newer touch and didn't charge.  I forget how to reset the thing.  I think you hold down the standby and the dot for 12 secs or something.  Look it up on google.  Otherwise take it in.  They will reset it.  Nice thing about IPod is you just resync the thing and everything is right back to where you were.  I'll say this about Infiniti though, they by far have the best interface for IPods.  Stupid Lexus (on a brand new GX460 with Mark Levinson) makes you scroll through all your songs to pick a solitary one.  No quick movement, no album cover art, no fast forward just skip, it's very basic.  You ever try to scroll down to a song starting with Z when it goes 2 per sec on an ipod with 1000 songs?  It's incredibly annoying.

My ipod is busted.  i have one of the 1st gen video ipods.  Ironically, the only place it DOES work is in my M35 because the scroll pad doesn't work.

Thanks for the info!  I'm gonna take the car and cable to the dealer and have them check it out and tell me why it isn't working.  As for the bricked ipod touch, I'll bring it to the apple store right near the dealership.  Hopefully they can get it reset.  I tried holding down the corner button and the front button at the same time for a pretty long time and it didn't respond.  Tried it also while hooked up to itunes, still no response.  The store will probably get it straightened out though.

Update...  The iPod is toast.  I took it to the Apple store and they couldn't do anything with it, said it was fried.

I took the car in to the dealership since it is under warranty.  I warned my service advisor that I think the car killed my ipod...  When I picked the car up I found out it also killed a tech's iphone and possibly another ipod.  So armed with plenty of evidence, the dealer contacted Nissan North America about getting my ipod replaced under the warranty.  A few days later I got a call from Nissan and end result is they reimbursed me over $300 for a new replacement iPod touch and replaced the bad cable... .  Gotta LOVE Infiniti.

Nice! I've never heard of an unmodified cable frying an ipod...they are molded assemblies and pretty hard to screw up unless someone spliced it?....

Did they take care of their techs?
