What do you hate about your M?
« on: April 30, 2009, 05:04:04 PM »

So I'm getting serious about buying another car in the near future.... one of the cars on that list is an M35.  Drove one, was impressed with the transmission (so please don't tell me about any transmission problems unless they relate to the 7spdAT I'll have), increased gas mileage, cooled seats, NAV, ride quality, etc.  Its a great car... I think.  So I just wanna know some reasons I should consider passing.

thanks!

Aging body. Still gorgeous but in need of a redo. More power.

M35 7AT with a twin turbo and 400 RWHP...it would rock!  I still like the looks.

What I didn't like about my M?

1. The exhaust note, too pale, it should have the exact same note as the FX, which is the best stock exhaust out there.
2. More adjustments for the driver seats, specially thigh support extension.
3. Integrated side windows shades (like on the Sequoia, BMW)  and auto rear window shade, (à la Mercedes).  This is only available on the Premium package still?  Even the C class has it standard with sport package.  This is a must for kids (and to better watch computer screen in bright sun light, etc.)

What I really did hate?  Nothing.  But it should have more power.

thanks RH.  I know that you can get a power rear sunshade, but i think you're right that its part of the $9k premium package that i was not opting for.

for the record i drove a G37 7AT.. seemed louder, not quite as much acceleration, but everything I loved about the new(er) G I could get in the M, and then some.  So the saga continues

I miss my M. I wouldn't say the same about a new one. I dislike the changes they made to the front/rear bumpers, etc. I will also second Ohmster on the styling starting to be dated - I was actually going to post a comment on that today. i saw an M on the road tonight, and for the first time ever, thought 'wow... it's actually starting to look old'. I remember when it was brand new, it was a head-turner.. now it seems like it's missing something.

To me, the M35 "Sport" (vs luxury) to me is considerably more "luxurous" than the G3X(S) (and I DO like the G, so this isn't a knock against it)..  When I get into the G, it has some things that make it feel "cheap"(er) to me (but it's in the right price range).. but when you then cross shop it with the M, the M (to me) is clearly the "nicer" car.

Beyond the silly styling cues that I personally dont like, the car is just.. a really great car, especially for the money. The only things I can think of, that you don't care about - the M doesn't have the "real" brake upgrades like the G3XS does. After that, it just comes down to pricing... would I pay $10K more for an M35 over a G37? Nope. $5-7k? Maybe...

based on incentives and interest rates, I think the 10k price difference is nonexistent.  We didn't get into any hardcore numbers today at the dealership, mainly because I feel like the closer to November I push this (end of my lease) the more they're going to want to get rid of them as its the end of MY.

The one i was looking at was  Sport & Tech (and african rosewood upgrade).  So around 52k.  I think they are advertising 6k off. so that puts it in the 46k range.  The G37xS I test drove (+premium & Nav) I believe was 43.5k.. so yeah the difference is essentially negligible.

The one major feature for me would be the oil dipstick location. You need a friggin' doctoral degree from the Colorado School of Mines to find it and reinsert it and a 1 million watt searchlight to finally see if you stuck it back in the right place.

Since I lack either, I once reinserted it right before a big trip; not. After driving for about 200 miles the engine started to smoke badly and I immediately stopped. I saw I had a bad oil leak "somewhere." I limped into Sears. We looked all over for the leak-couldn't find it-oil was everywhere!!! Finally someone decided to check and see how much was gone-they discovered the dipstick not inserted-but firmly planted right alongside the opening.

I told them I had no idea who checked the oil last...

Friggin' dipstick!!!

52K for a '35? Wow. But the $6k incentive is nice.. personally i like the aluminum-ish trim over the woods that infiniti offers. Are you set on a '35, or have you considered the 45? I think they'd be trying even harder to ditch those.

I don't like a low resolution Nav screen. The Nav system is quite nice, but I had a REALLY nice hi-res sharp screen in my IS 250, makes a big difference. Also would be nice if the screen was a touch screen like in IS 250, a neat feature. What I really hate and miss in my 2007 M is the lack of axillary audio jack. I know there is one in cars with premium entrainment package, but I think it is total BS that they didn't include it as a standard feature. My 2006 IS 250 had it, and the newer 2007 M does not? WTF? At the moment I also find that the seat is not very comfortable (the lumbar support sticks out too much even when deflated completely), but it seems that it only bother me so far.

I'll ask about additional M45 incentives, but the way it was presented to me it was $6k for either or 1.9% or a mixture of both (which was the angle I was going to play).  A similarly equipped M45 would be about 56k and includes a gas guzzler tax... ugh.

Gotta say i'm a big fan of the 7AT and I thought as far as power it held company with the G.  The only real perceivable difference in driving style of the two was it seemed the M had more body roll... but then I'd probably be dropping it anyhow, so it could be a moot point.

I liked the aluminum (braided) too, but the african rosewood wasn't bad.

Not sure if its new for 2008 or 2009, but the NAV is touchscreen now.... Smiley  Which is pretty cool in my book.  the screen is low res, yeah, but its liveable.  I think it had an aux input jack in the glove box, but I didn't pay a TON of attention.  I was way too interested in playing with the IPOD connectivity.  It was really really cool... big time selling point for me.

as for the seats... they seemed pretty similar to the G seats, which while not super comfy are supportive and haven't been too problematic for me.

What is this african rosewood? The '06/07's were Brazilian Rosewood. I have one of the rarer sports with it. Love it (and it has nothing to do with my living in that country for many a year).

He's comparing the Luxury seats though vs the sport seats. There should definitely be a bit of a different feel between the two.

Touch screen came in the '08's along w/ HDD navi rather than DVD. I think it also has XM traffic as well, and a mildly updated user interface (which was pretty nice). The screen isnt of the best resolution, but it's definitely decent quality.

True on the 7AT. I only ever drove the older 5AT M35 so I can't compare. I guess it's probably a lot closer in performance now to the M45. From my understanding, the GGT was only being applied to the M45x, not the M45 2WD? Could be wrong on that though.

Just keep in mind (which I know you are aware of), when the '10's (or 11's) roll out that you don't get buyer's remorse due to body changes! Smiley But, given the fact we haven't seen any pics of the '10+, who can say what it'll look like. Sad
