bad luck
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:20:13 PM »

I drove my wife's FX this weekend, and when I passed 60 mph mark on the free way, the steering wheel started shaking. Shaking was getting worse the faster I went. I thought maybe one of the wheels got out of balance....? Took car to dealer this morning. They telling me, left front wheel (rim) has been damaged (no longer a perfect circular shape) although no visible damage can be seen. Pot hole perhaps, they asked?
In any case, it is gonna be a freaking grand to replace it...... What a set back.

Just find a straight wheel on ebay. IF you need to replace the tire, I bet you could find one with the same tread depth as the current ones on ebay as well. Are they 20"s or 18"s? I'm guessing 20"s because it would be hard to bend a 18" wheel on a FX.

wow..... I'd check the forums and/or ebay to see if you can find a single used rim at a better price.

Like these guys said try E-bay.  You could also try InfinitiFX.org and Infinitiscene.com (FX and EX site).

Good luck finding a replacement man, I think the suggestions above are right on the money.

Nope believe it or not, those are 18".... This is a 2005 FX. Yes, I'm looking on ebay and craigslist, though would be hard to find a single used rim, I think.

I cant even imagine what your wife could have hit that would cause the wheel to be that badly damaged? I had an FX with the stock 20's and I used to run over EVERYTHING and they were unstopable Smiley

Did you try going to somewhere besides the dealer? It could have thrown a weight or something and the dealer could be trying to rob you.. not that they'd ever do such a thing :| I'd say it's particularly suspicious if your wife doesn't remember hitting anything.. especially if there is no visual damage. Doesn't add up...

I also highly suggest the following -

http://www.car-part.com/

It looks like the gateway to a spam site but it's far from that. It's basically a list of (almost) every single inventoryable (new word!) item at junk yards across the USA. I have found rims on there, etc. Depending on what year your FX is, the rims could have spanned multiple model years, so you'll have a larger choice (eg it's a 2005 but the rims were used on the 05-07's... )

Good luck!

Another totally random thought -

Aren't you wheel shopping? Maybe you can see if your stock M rims will fit on the FX....... Smiley

The bolt pattern fits for the FX.  I think the offset is a little less on the M so they'll sit a little more flush as well.  Could be a nice change.

Here is the update on the issue. Dealer kept the car for 2 days (waiting for new rim to arrive), then on a 3rd day I get a call from them with good news: the wheel is ok, it turned out to be some piece where the rotor is mounted (behind the rotor I guess) that caved in or something..... They were able to change that part on the warranty (nice isn't it?), then rebalanced all wheels. Total cost $31.95 for balancing. This is nice, but...... took the car on a highway few days later, the steering wheel still shakes when you let it go, but just a little bit (almost unnoticeable and only when you are NOT holding on to the wheel) and at even a higher speed. Big improvement of course, but it is still not 100% the way it was. To compare, I took my M to about 110 mph next day, and the steering wheel is solid as a rock. So the question is what next? I'm afraid if I take it back, they will tell me that the wheel still needs to be changed.....

And on another note....... While the car was at the shop they loaned me a G37x...... Geez, it is a freaking rocket guys....so damn fast, amazing. I had no idea it got bumped to 328 hp..... When I got back into my M, it seemed like a slow elephant.....

Good to hear. So wheels were balanced, and steering shakes when brakes are not applied. Could it be an alignment issue?

Yup, the G37 sedan is a little rocket. Your M might seem slow in comparison, but it still is a nice ride!

Good to hear that it did not cost as much, but hopefully they can figure out why you still have problems.  If needed, the following link has stock wheels:

I dont think it's even possible to bent 18'' rim on FX
It has so much cushion
I'v hit so many big potholes in NY for the past 3 years and my 20''s are as good as new
Most likely some other problem there

I wonder if swapping fronts with backs will yeld the same result

Good idea Andrey.  I'm glad it is at least partially resolved timecurve.
