Gotta change my brake pads myself
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:31:21 PM »

I think this should be fairly standard, but who knows?  I just did this on bikes though, but when Infiniti wanted to charge me $600+ again to change the front pads balance the rotors (unnecessary in a 15K mile car when they did that in the rear, they do that to eliminate noise, in time the pads do seat).   I think a break change should be $90+pad + one or 1/2 labor hour, or about $250 total.  They want to charge me $600 and something.

So I'm going to do it myself, buy the OEM pads and see how hard it can be.  Any advice?

They said front tires should be changed too, they wanted me to buy one and use the unused spare up front, but I thought we had to change all fours (AWD)?  Had to research on that too.

Their service charges are typically outrageous, thats why I went with a prepaid service contract this time, which supposedly saved me about 25-33% and then I got that at 50% of advertised cost so I feel like at THAT rate its fair.

I too have heard you're not supposed to change just one tire if you have all wheel drive but I'm not sure if that is just a ploy to get more money from you.  Seems like it would screw up your traction control more than anything with the incongruent tire diameters.

I think you could do it on your own if you want to invest time and money, or you could get it done at a chain place (pep boys, firestone, sears, etc) for probably 1/2 of what Infiniti quoted you just probably wouldnt be OEM equipment.

I haven't done brake pads in a while, but they are typically very easy. I used to use this little gadget to push back the piston so no bleeding was required. This might give you an idea of how long it's been! Smiley

Changing the pads themselves is a piece o'cake. Bleeding is the bear, and it's easy to get air in the lines.

Yeah, I know about the bleeding. very nasty oil too.   What little gadget, Ohmster?  I'd love to avoid the bleeding if I can.

From what I recall, bleeding is only necessary if you open an otherwise closed system. The problem is fitting in new thicker pads where the piston has pushed out to accommodate the old thinning ones. This gadget actually allows you to push back the piston without damaging anything or having to mess with the brake lines. Then the new pads just slide in and no bleeding is required.

I'll take a look in the garage and see if I can find the brand, model, or manufacturing information.

I kind-of helped change the pads on the M a few weeks ago.  Its not too hard, though we were in a shop with a lift, A/C and every tool known to man.  Not sure how hot it is out there but its been BRUTAL over here.  Anyway, hows the fluid doing?  If you do end up flushing the fluid, all it will take is some pumping action from the wifey. Wink  That and you keeping a VIGIL eye on the reservoir while it fills up.  This guy has been a wealth of info for the 4Runner world.  Check out the "brake pedal method"...

Thanks guys for the advice.  I'm going to give it a shot soon (Wife is going to Houston again this Wed until next Friday and the car is going to stay parked at the SFO - Even if she left the FX in the garage I would have my hands full with the kids the whole weekend anyway LOL).

Very interesting read, Turbo, thanks.
