Well, 535d exist already, so as other series with this engine
The question is, when are they going to bring the rest of the cars to US
I do agree that this engine suits better for larger/heavier cars
X5 is a good start, but X6 and 5/7 series should get this diesel ASAP

Ideally, this engine should be paired with new DCT 7-speed tranny to make acceleration and MPG even better

Pricing released.

Base MSRP for the BMW 335d will be $44,725 (the price includes destination fees). The base MSRP for the X5 xDrive 35d will be $52,025 (including fees). Both vehicles will qualify for the IRS Alternative Motor Vehicle Tax Credit.

I am thinking Andrey said just a couple grand more than a 335i... this seems a bit more than 2k.

Well this depends on how you calculate it
If you take both cars with 6AT tranny (335d only comes with AT) the price difference is $2,475
If you apply $900 tax rebate it becomes $1,575
So, for extra $1,575 you get exactly the same equipped car with diesel engine

Diesel is definitely the engine of the immediate future...  Not so sure way down the line but the idea of it just makes sense.  Over built sipper around town and boost for when you want to have fun.  If I can get 20mpg in a 9,000lb tank that has 7.3 liters of displacement, over 500lb/ft and a drag coefficient of an apartment building then I can't wait to see what ze-germans have in store.  Gasoline cars have survived so well in this country because of how our economy supports it and the fact that we don't like oily stinky mess, not because the technology is any better.  Also those that say diesels are no fun to drive haven't driven the right one if one at all.  This is my personal experience so you don't have to agree but to me there is no better feeling than the rush of torque you feel from a turbo-diesel.  Yes, they might not be quite as fun on a road course where you can really ring out an engine but day to day where do you think the power will be of better use.  In the Excursion on race mode it was just a rush of torque that never let up.  Yeah so it doesn't rev to 8k but it doesn't need to.  There is no waiting for the power, yes there was some turbo lag in the Ex but thats because the turbo was bigger than my head (literally).  That will not be the case in these cars from Germany.  Also, if there is any question that a diesel can't preform... I think the performance of the R10 speaks for its self...

In the Excursion on race mode...

Excursion and 'race mode' in the same sentence? Seems so wrong. I don't necessarily disagree with you re diesels....they were the rage when we were living in the UK.

Diesels are also more fun for the tuners because the nature of how a diesel works.  It has to be seriously over built so adding power is generally limited by the transmission and turbos depending on the vehicle.  For the cost of a cat-back exhaust on our cars I gained 4mpg on the hi-way, 100hp and over 200lb/ft in the Excursion.  Yes gains on cars won't be quite so large mostly because of the size of turbos but I wouldn't doubt over 50hp could be had by a chip and exhaust.  Hell the gas 2.0T in the Audis get over 300lb/ft with a chip alone thanks to direct injection.  Man I love boost...  I'm glad to hear BMW is adding boost to their M cars, things are going to get nutty in the power department in the years to come.

Totally agree with the above statements
Non-diesel 335i TT engine is very tunable as well
You can pretty much get 70-80 WHP on that car with just a piggybag tune ($500+)
That's over 400HP crank
I wanna see the same tuner guys develop piggybag for this new 335d
I know in EU they tuned 335i and 335d, but not with the same success as here
US tuners seems to make better piggybags than EU folks
Possibly due to market demand (lack of it)
I can easily see 350WHP/450WHP on the D

It does increase your MPG as well

Boost is GOOD
