BMW European Delivery

Bmws I guess are great vehichles for the most part. I could only assume so since sooooooooooo many people ave them. I live in the D.C. metro area, Northern Va to be exact, and I swear, everybody has some sort of Bmw, with the 5 series leadind the way. Last wednesday, my friend and I while standing in a parkinglot of a major shopping center counted 22 beemers in about 15 minutes. To me, as good as a beemer may be, I would never get one because its really on honda accord or toyota camry level around here. My m45 however, turns plently of heads and is really way more exclusive than even a 750!! I don't know if thats so good for Infiniti, but I hope they never get that much market saturation. Also, the money issue. I think a 3 series would be a great mid 40k's car. NOt a decent 54k car as a fully loaded 335 runs if you deck it out. A fully loaded 550i runs over 74k! For 64, I admit, great car, but almost 80 comeon. As long as Infiniti can bring comparable performance with similar luxury and decent looks (no bmw really sets me on fire) then they win. The new M50 will probably not be quite as quick as the new 555, but for 14k cheaper I'll take it. Its like this to me. Infiniti seems like I got more car for the money, like I got a bargin. A car that gives you more for less, but still nice. My m45 sport feels like a more expensive car than what it is. I find it hard to believe that a 550 would feel that much better and have me feel like I got more than the potential 70+k price I paid. For example in my humble opinion:

3 series= great low 30's-mid 40's car
5 series= great low 40's-mid 50's car
7 serires= great mid 70's-low90's car

I somewhat agree with you... a 3 series is a AWESOME car for about 45 grand.  When its 55 grand... its not as appealing because for the money you can get a better car.  Now on the lease side you get a great car at a slashed price because of the high residual value of BMWs.  I think THAT is the reason why you see so many of them.

I'm a big fan of their styling... I cruised behind a guy in an X5 for about 20 miles today on the way back from the beach just because I thought the car was so stunning.  I was like you wanna go test drive one of those (to the wife) she's like no... the Jeep is better!  I guess that helps save money!

I agree with both of you regarding the price 55K is way too much for 3-er
However, most people are missing one thing, which is never available for Infiniti or other Japaneese brands
You can do european delivery with BMWs and save 6-7K or more, depending on the model
I paid 45K for my fully loaded 335i
My friend just brought his nicely (almost fully) loaded 335i for 43K, he didnt take active steering and couple of other options that most ppl would even know about

And guess what i will get for my car when i sell it in 4-5 yrs?
That's right, good chunk of $$, koz residual on bimmers is great
BTW my friend just sold his 2002 330i for 17,700, that's just amaizing

Think what the car is gonna cost you in the long run, not what you pay at the moment

I just think BMW is almost cliche, and look forward to the day when someone is better. I am curious as to the European delivery. How much does it cost to get it back over here? What is the tax situation? How much does it cost to go to and stay in Europe for at least a couple of days to take delivery? If you add all this up doesn't it count toward the bottom line? Educate me please, but I assume it probably cost almost 1g to get to Europe and back. Then to stay there, somewhere with the exchange rate has to cost close to another 1k or so, I have to imagine, maybe incorrectly that to ship a car back to the US is at least 1k, at least. I used to be a Marine and was overseas and they were offering to ship cars back for guys if they bought one, and it was starting at $2500 and that was 1997. Then what kind of tax do you have to pay? I just would want to know the real net savings over the dealer price here. Help me.

Okay so I went to travelocity and looked at a 3 day trip to pick up a car from Europe. On average it was $2000 just for 3 days total time with 1 day in the hotel and a roundtrip flight. Car shipping was averaging $2300. If I don't eat I could potentialy save 6k on a Beemer.

I may be wrong on that, but I've look at that in the past, and IIRC, you don't pay shipping.  BMW includes that in the price tag, as with everyother BMW not build in the USA.  The same goes for Infiniti, you don't see a tab for shipping from Japan, but you bet Infiniti is not paying for it out of their profits either.  You don't pay German tax too, you ride with special plates - but you stay for too long either, or your registration expires (with the dollar that low, that doen not make much sense either).  Air fare with Lufthansa is supposedly at a discount, but I remember not being very flexible with dates.  You buy your car months in advance of your planning trip, and you'd better got your options right, you can't change that in the meantime - of course.   You also save a lot on car rentals of course, it's not like you're in a bus with no choice for a stop, etc!  Smiley

Actually the "delivery" (not shipping... but delivery) of the car to the dealership you have chosen to receive the car at is whatever it usually costs... 750 or so I think.  The 6k in savings is all because they don't have to pay the dealer incentives for selling the car.  As for the travel... yes it will probably offset any discounts you receive on the vehicle... BUT its a nice deal.  Can you get a free vacation from Infiniti or Lexus or whoever for that matter, no.  So its cool... its not for everybody, but I think it would be an awesome trip (as evidenced by the stunning pics seen in the other thread).

i think Rippling Hurst beat me to the post... but i'm too lazy to change mine Tongue

I'm sorry, but i did not pay anything for shipping
My final cost for the car (delivered) was 6K less
You pay normal destination charge of 750 as you would if you bought the car at the dealer
When i say 6K, i mean 6K, no hidden crap

BTW, cars are built in Germany, but they are US spec
My car is not different from any others sold in US
My dealer doesnt even know it is ED car

P.S. Dont want to have a nice vacation and spend $$, just buy $400 RT ticket and comeback home same day
All you have to do is sign papers at the Welt and drop off your car 10miles down the road
A lot of ppl do that

Thank you, I have been properly educated on the process now. Thats not a bad deal at all and certainly would make any beemer purchase worth a look.

Also here is a good start:
http://www.edbmw.com/main/

A little summary

Car cost: MSRP - about 6K (optioned 7K)
MSRP -> ED MSRP -> ED Invoice (3K+ apart from e/other)
You pay ED invoice

Shipping: no cost ($750 destination charge you pay regardless)

Tax: Regular purchase tax base on the state you live in. Final ED price taxed which is 6-7K less than MSRP. So you save some $ on taxes as well, because of lower sticker price

Tickets (round trip):
I paid $480 on october 30th
I booked my friend's tickets for $460 on April 15th
Cheapest price is between october and march
Most expencieve is summer
So the range of tickets are $400 - $1000

6k is average price discount on a 3-series, but there are even larger reductions possible on other (more expensive) models right?

That's correct
Bigger sticker = bigger discount
