New BMW inline-6 engines
« on: June 24, 2009, 10:44:29 AM »

Quote
BMW has unveiled two new turbocharged straight-six engines that it expects to gradually replace V8 engines for most of its customers. It has also launched a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which also promises improved economy.

The 3.0-litre petrol petrol unit is dubbed the TwinPower turbo and is the first BMW unit to combine the familiar Valvetronic variable valve management (although the system has been newly downsized) with high-pressure fuel injection and turbocharging.

looks nice... how is it better than the current engine in the 335?  Is it purely the fuel economy?  because the power seems comparable.

Well it's couple of things
-Added Valvetronic (currently double-vanoz) to DI/turbo setup
-New singe twin-scroll turbo (vs TT setup)

Diesel variant looks the same to me, just more power and TQ

So it should be even less lag, which is non-existed right now

I wonder how much power can be extracted with future tuning

I commend BMW for constantly developing new engines and transmissions.  Was there anything wrong with the latest twin turbo v6?  Not really, au contraire, still, they keep moving forward.  It's impressive.  Infiniti and Lexus should be ashamed, they insist on the same basic design for ages.  Not to mention Acura, but that's not a luxury brand, really.

My next car could well be a BMW, too bad somebody on the Sequoia forum is lemon lawing a 335i because they can't solve his turbo and fuel pump issues.

. We're lemon lawing our 335I convertable. Two turbos, five fuel pumps and several other issues. The car will be a year old next month. BMW keeps putting in the same defective fuel pump design that strands you on the side of the road.. Nice
.  My wife got stranded on a bridge with a Jeep once, at night.  It scared her no end.  It's the worst thing it can happen to you.  She never drove the car again, we've since bought the FX, not a single issue in two years.

Wow, 5 times
There is gotta be something else wrong
I have 26K on the ODO with single visit to the dealer and that was just 15K scheduled maintenance

Some dealers are just dumb, they could have fixed wrong issue/part and it came back to them

+1 on the moving forward part
They always try to improve things
New iDrive, google downloads, new voice command in 2010
And of cource new engines/trannys

I found myself always coming back to BMW after owning other cars
I think this time i'll just stay with bimmers, whatever it the next one will be

I wonder if they can give up some of their v8 in favor of a straight six.  A straight six is inherently balanced, you could have a 10L engine, 6 cyl, no problem.  It would be a long engine though, and I suspect not rev happy?  Would they just increase a 3 series engine boost?  That would be odd, you could buy a chip and get a 550i equiv. for the price of a 535i equiv.  OTHO would a 4.5/5.0 turbo straight six be too long?    Are we going to see a 750i turbo?  Hummm...

535i is very similar to 550i as is
Chipped, it will blow 550s doors off
It will do so with much better fuel economy too

4.4L is TT engine now
It's used in new 7-series and X5/X6

Same 4.4L engine is also used on new ///Ms (X5/X6) but with different setup, just block is the same

Since BMW uses the same engines across the whole line up, it makes sence to build them fairly small

N54 (335i) engine is fitted from Z4/135i all way to X6 and 7-series (EU model)
I doubt it can be any bigger in size right now

Future M3 might get TT V6 with probably more displacement (rumors) like GTR for example

4.4L is TT now, but it's not an inline 6, but a v8.  My point is, are we going to see the i-6 on the bigger, top of the line cars, replacing the v8, as the article suggests?

I'm not sure I'd buy this magical chip thing (otherwise they'd be doing it right now).

v6?

What about the M5?  any rumors about (the end of) the v10?

I'm not sure where you got that "as the article suggests"
It's only new 3L i-6 engines
Do you mind quoting it please?

335s,135s and 535s are being chipped left and right these days
There are lots of tuners now for this engine

I dont think 4.4 TT has chips yet, but it's just a matter of time, since it's used in more applications (besides X6) now

I bet it will use the same 4.4 TT found in ///M X5/6

Just to be clear
4.4 TT has two variants
450HP and 550HP
Same blocks, different turbos and setups

For example:
X6 xDrive35= 3.0 TT 300HP
X6 xDrive50 = 4.4 TT 450HP
X6 M = 4.4 TT 550HP

huh?

There. So it's not about just replacing the current 6, the really interesting and challenging part is "replacing the v8 for most customers" (v8 customers, most of them on the 550).  One would think only the M's would keep the v8, and the i6 would also go to, say, the 750i, or the 550i etc.

Oh gotcha
I thought you were reffering to new V8s (TT)

Yes, i does make sence to replace 4.8L V8 with 6-cyl TT

Since there is a 6-cyl NA and 6-cyl TT (new TT = twinpower T), there is no need (IMO) for that old 4.8L V8
It's still being used in 650, 550, and X5, but newer cars dont get this engine anymore
X6 and 7-series V8s are now 4.4 TT

So yes, gradually replacing THAT old V8

So future lineup looks like following:
3L NA (aka 328i)
3L TT (aka 335i)
4.4L TT 450HP (aka X6 xDrive50, new 7)
4.4L TT 550HP (new big ///Ms)

The reason they aren't coming "chipped" from the factory is because it would be a big NO-NO for the cheaper, lesser model to out power the "better" "upscale" V8 model.  They do command a tad more respect (or I would anyway) when it comes to warm up and cool down due to added boost/temps but thats why there is R&D...

Yeah, but old v8s are replaced by new tt v8s, so it's not that interesting to me.
