Testdrive - BMW X6 5.0 vs new 550i
« on: June 12, 2010, 12:00:49 AM »

So i got invited to this "ultimate driving event" organized by BMW right at my dealership
Something like "BMW vs competition"
They brought bunch of new 5-series (F10 body), new Z4s, new 1 and 3 series which includes "is" trim
Same TT engine with overboost.
They also brought MBs and Audis for comparison sake
My CA called me since she knew i wanted to drive X6 and 5-er side by side
So here i am
step 1 : Went to one of the desks to fill some basic info, name, email, etc (this is to get $1000 rebate if i deside to buy anything before October)
This took whole 2 minutes. They gave me all-inclusive-resort type of wrist band with BMW rightings on it and i went to next desk

step 2:
At another desk (outside) they asked me which car i'd like to drive
Once choise is made they give you the keys and suggested route but you do whatever you like and as long as you like i guess.

Step 3: Driving 550i with all possible goodies for about 20min with some highway runs and backroad twisties
This thing actually can handle its own power
Ramps, backroads are pretty well managed
Car stays flat and moneuvers well
A lot of confidence for a not-so-sporty sedan
There is a presence of a floatty feeling and steering feedback was not as good as on my car, but it can be attributed to this new active steering system with rear-wheel steer
Car feels bigger than outgoing 5-series, close to 7-series. This is not just the size either.
Tech and luxury of it is right on par with 7-er
All AT cars now have this new 8-speed transmision
This is probably one of the best ATs built to date
Shifts seamlessly and very quick. Same goes for downshift and kick-down mode
Car rockets to 100mph from any speed in just few seconds. Unfortunatelly it doesnt feel that at all.
Thank God for head-up display showing the speed, otherwise i would have been in trouble in no time
Overall, i really like the car, but i suppose it's not my cup of tea Sad
It's shifted to more luxury and a bit less sport now
So 5-series became more executive-like car
It's solid, it's not "look-at-me" car, you can probably go hours in it and won't feel you spent this much time at the wheel
It's fast and comfortable, it can take some twisties comfidently, just not enough car-feel for me

step 4: After returning 550i with a big grin on my face i was handed off keys from 2011 X6 5.0 to hit the same roads
This car was also equipped with all possible options
Drive...
As soon as i left he parking lot i senced that it would be a whole different animal (which it should be)
I mean, it means business.
Sound, road feel, dynamics, everything was there
I found it hard to believe that such big car (SUV) is capable of riding in this manner
It felt like i was in sport car, but at the same time i was higher up from the ground
I could throw this car into corners same way as my 335i
Those twisted backroads needed tripple speed limit for me to test the half of the capability of the car
Forget acceleration, this 8-speed (same as on 5-er) was even more agressive
Lightning-fast shfts send me to tripple-digit speeds in a moment
Breaks are amazing too. Stops with confidence, no nose dive or any motion, just like my car, just stops where you want it to be stopped

So my dilema is over, X6 was hands-down better car overall, in all departments except for interior
But the driving experience is THIS much better, even though i was expecting otherwise
AWD and extra storage is just great bonus
Oh did i mention it was manager's car and not part of the event?
As soon as my CA pulled over in it, whole croud at the dealership froze for a moment
It is such a looker
Definetelly one of the best looking BMWs to date

P.S. I want this car in M version so badly now
It's calling my wallet

Kinda of crazy event.  Customers are invited to try the car at triple digit speeds on public roads?   I wish I had a dealer like that!

Did you hear of any accidents?  Lol

Thanks for the review.   Couple of things that confuses me:

1.  The x6 is based on a raised 3 series, right?  It has a shorter wheelbase and everything is smaller than a 5 series?

2. You can definitely throw a car around when you have awd. So I'm sure that is a factor helping around corners, specially against a  550 rwd.

2.  Is it heavier still (than a 5 series?)

3.  Why are the interiors any different?  We all know BMWs look the same, but the materials should also be the same on top of the line v8s, or there is a price difference?

I think you've been dead set on an x6 for a while, and if you had that much fun driving it, I can't see how it could be a disappointment.   I wonder if BMW went too soft with the 550 too?

It's not kind of crazy
I was alone in both cars and i could do whatever i want, as i would be in my own car

1. X5 is on 5-series platform, it has same wheel base and interior space for the most part

2. AWD is not the reason here. My car is RWD, but i car rotate it into corners and out with such ease
Same goes with X6. It kind of defies laws of physics. It feels much more precise and completelly flat. Steering feel is perfect on this car. In other words, it has closer driving dynamics to my car than to its platform-brother
It is much heavier than 5, but different suspension and 315-wide tires do some magic there

3. Interior is from face-lifted X5 which is nice (although X6M has nicer leather and dash) but not the same as new 550i
5-series is now built on the same plant as 7-er, so they share a lot of parts

Not sure if they went too soft on 5-er, but active steering kills that sporty feeling and feedback
I have active steering as well, but different technology

BMW is good about doing these events.  They have one up at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville every year.  You can have them out for a few hours during the day and then they have a dinner drive which is in the evening and you can bring it back "by 11" but you really just bring it back to the valet so pretty much any time before the morning.  Last time out I took out a 650 convertible and a 7 series.  The TT motors weren't out yet otherwise I would have driven one of those as well.  Thats great news you like the X6 as much as you thought you would.  My only suggestion is maybe next time taking someone that isn't so into it and see what they think.  With me love is blind and sometimes I need a good objective view when purchasing a new vehicle.  Hell, I have convinced myself to get a non-diesel ford product?! Wink  At the end of the day it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks but sometimes its nice to have an alternate opinion.  You should have also driven the x5 after the x6 to see the difference other than head room and added trunk space.  I could have told you the new 5 is going to be a dud.  Its now literally a mini7, taking too many notes from GM??  That is great news about the trans, I truly don't know how people live with SMG.

Always a good idea to take along a copilot on your testdrive.  I like my buddy, who is an autophile like myself, and my wife who complains a lot Tongue  Between those two we can figure out whats going to be an issue.

I guess I could take someone with me, but I'm not sure if that's going to change anything
my wife thinks it's the best car ever, so I know she'll be happy with this choice
all pleople I know, also speak highly about the car
it's more comfortable than my 335i and has more room and tech
plus it suites better for bad NYC roads and being kids hauler

Haha
that was such failure
X6 though sold twice the amount of expected vehicles
BMW didn't think it would get this popular
