Thats pretty amazing/stupid.
She would have had a better chance of saving the car if she left it and un-hooked the battery.  Its obvious the interior is already shot so why risk hydrolock?  If you ever get caught in that situation like that while your driving its better to keep a steady medium speed.  There will be a wave created by the front of the vehicle which creates a low spot behind the wave (where the engine bay is).  Something I have picked up in my off-road days and savannah days.  30min of hard rain in Savannah is enough to flood the place.
