WOW!! 2009 BMW 5 Series GT Concept

Boy, I think I like it very much!!

2009 BMW 5 Series GT Concept

What we've been referring to as the Progressive Activity Sedan has now been revealed as the BMW 5-Series GT Concept prior to the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. It blends the styling characteristics of the 2009 7-series and the CS Concept that made its debut in Shanghai two years ago.

The wheelbase is close to the 2009 7-series sedan's 120.9 inches allowing for an extremely roomy interior space with a large capacity rear cargo area. The kidney grille up front shares the proportions of the 7 series along with the shape of the tail lamps. The headlights take more than just a little influence from the now canceled CS Concept. The coupe-like roof line finishes off in a hatchback-style trunk area with a pretty neat closure. The full hatch opens to reveal a large cargo area, but a secondary smaller tailgate opens to reveal a convenient pass through for smaller items.

We'll bring you more information as it becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest in the 2009 5-Series GT Concept saga a.k.a. the biggest elephant in the room.

IMHO, that's what the X6 should be all about...The X6 is an ugly contraption...this is what BMW should be doing now! (IMHO, of course).

I'm not particularly wowed by tihs.  But what I really don't get is what makes this great and the X6 bad?   The lines aren't that dissimilar from the X6 with the sloping rear roofline, just mostly with different front and rear ends, a fancy hatch and a lower ride height.

I would also disagree with X6 comment
X6 will not look bad regardless of comparison
First thing i thought when i saw the photo - it was X6 "facelifted"
Id has a lot of similar lines indeed
X6 so far is my favorite SUV

I think the X6 is truncated...too short for its height...like the Pontiac Aztek.  The front end of the X6 is too ugly.  Unbearable.

This one has a 120in wheelbase, like the (7 series).  This is some whole 5in longer than most midsize sedans, making it a long car.  Lots of room inside, the opposite of the X6.

Now, if the slopping rear roofline make them look the same, I can't help you.  You have to say the same about every 4 door "coupe" on the market, including Audis, Mercedes, Passats and Mazdas.

I'd have to question if the extra couple inches of wheelbase really translate to more interior room compared to the X6.  The proportions make it look like it has a longer hood with shorter overhangs.  Really won't know until you get full specs on the dimensions.  I just dunno if wheelbase alone gives it more room the X6 since its not as tall and it may not be any longer.

And most 4 door coupes do share similar rooflines.  But I'm talking similar lines within a single brand and the side profile between the X6 and this are very similar, just that the X6 is taller.  I see this, and it strikes me as a X6 that was redesigned to be a car and not a crossover SUV.  The predominant different in appearance is that this takes from the new 7 series.  If you look at the X6 from the fenderline up, it looks very much like this, both are very car like.  Its only the lower half of the X6, where its stretched and tall, that gives it the SUV appearance, whereas the GT is much shorter and car like.

That's where I see the similarities.  Top half, not bottom.  Really that this isn't a GT 5 series as they're billing it, its a car version of the X6.

I would hope the extra wheelbase (5 in. is a lot) will definitely impact the interior space.  Otherwise, what's the point?  To simply balace front and rear weight bias?  This is not a sport car.   I doubt this will only fit 4 shorties, as the x6.  I'm hoping it will have room for 3 6' adults in the back seat.  Otherwise, I'll pass.

Hummm, maybe you're right and I'm lacking in imagination.  Up to now I see the X6 as a pumped up 3 series, like you put one on top of the other to fit oversize wheels for its size.  I was thinking that this would be the car to trade in my FX, but you're ruining my expectations!!  If I start to see the GT as car version of the X6, I'll blame you...  Grin

I also really liked the headlights, they come from the CS concept, not from the 7 series.  The X6 have the same front end as the 3-series...c'mon now...

But that's the CS concept.    Smiley

Pretty similar to the GT, I first thought.

From the press release

• With the rear seats in their regular position, the BMW Concept 5 Series
Gran Turismo offers the passengers at the rear the same legroom as
in the BMW 7 Series and virtually the same headroom as in the BMW X5.
In this configuration, luggage compartment capacity is 430 litres or
15.1 cubic feet. The partition wall behind the rear seats separates the
passenger and luggage compartments from one another in terms of both
acoustics and climate conditions, like in a sedan. If necessary, the rear seats
move fore-and-aft by up to 100 millimetres or more than 3.9" - so that
with the seats moved as far forward as possible, the occupants still enjoy
the same legroom as in the BMW 5 Series Sedan, with luggage capacity
increasing to 570 litres or almost 20 cubic feet. Then, once folding down
the rear seat backrests and the partition wall, the luggage compartment
further increases in size to its maximum capacity of 1,650 litres or nearly
58 cubic feet. The firm cover on the luggage compartment may be
stowed away in the floor of the compartment, again in the interest of extra
convenience.

X6 has 25.6 cubic feet of trunk storage and 59.7 cubic feet of seat-down storage.

But It's not a wagon...I'm a little disappointed with the cargo specs...My current FX has 64.5 with the rear seats down and 27.4 with all seats in place...The BMW Wagon if I'm not mistaken (540it) is about 60/32, but do they sell it in US?  Maybe the best substitute for the FX is going to be another FX...

Also what's up with two seats in the back?  Hope this is just a concept version.
