7spd Auto for G?
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:48:49 AM »

As the new FX and M should get the new JATCO 7spd auto, what are the chances it will be found in a G35/G37?  Automobile Mag (May 2008) speculates it may make its debut in the G37 convertible to be released later this year.

Sweet, I think it needs this to stay comparable with other models from Lexus and others.   Cool

Wait for the mid-cycle refresh.  I'm sure you'll see it then.

I'm just pissed that the European models are getting upgrades that we aren't.  EX in Europe gets the VQ37VHR and I think the 14" brakes in addition to the new 7 speed.

Supposedly better gas mileage related to lower revs on highway cruise, however, the gearing on the 7spd FX is not very conservative.  Its as if they geared it for speed, (the FX50 is going to be doing 0-60 in 5.2 secs) rather than gas mileage.  On the other hand, the G's should get quicker if it is an aggressively geared 7 speed.

Their logic is rather than going with a very tall overdrive, or double overdrive, similar to what you see with the T56 on a Corvette, more narrowly spaced gears so that you always have the engine in its optimum power range, or geared for optimal fuel efficiency at lower speeds.  Apparently fuel efficiency at 80 mph was never on their rader.  It'll help city fuel efficiency with no benefit to highway.

I would have thought the 7spd would help more on fuel efficiency when cruising on the highway than in the City.  Is it the opposite?  Are there any benefits to a 7spd over a 5spd other than fuel efficiency, such as smoother shifting or a quieter engine at cruising speeds?  How much difference do you think a 7spd will make in fuel economy?  If it makes a lot of difference, why was a 7spd not used on the car originally?

Well the final gear ratio would determine most of what you asked... cruising noise, cruising rpm, crusing mpg.  Infiniti decided to gear the 7 speed in a way in which the final gear in the 7spd isn't much lower than the final gear in the 5 speed.  Therefore, the noise, rpm, and consequently mpg are not varied much.

As I said in my other post... its somewhat obvious they were going to power when they designed this... keep the car in optimal power band and therefore make it quicker... less gas pedal necessary to accellerate COULD lead to higher mpg's.. much the same way my wife's Jeep 5.7L gets almost identical gas mileage as the 4.7L because it doesnt have to work as hard with the same gearing to accellerate at the same pace.

I wonder if the new 7 speed will will keep the 2nd-3rd gear thunk/slam-shift feature?

Its an all new transmission, so I wouldn't think it would "carry-over" unless they put it there on purpose

yeah but you gotta consider they're using it across the board... from the G (lightest) to the FX50 (considerably heavier)

So,

Since I am car-mechanically-challenged, someone please give me details on how all the gear ratio numbers work out.. Smiley  I could googol but its more fun this way!

The larger the number the "shorter" the gear.  Shorter gears equal higher torque multiplication to the wheels, which equal higher acceleration (after mechanical losses, physics ya know) but lower top speed at your rpm limit.

With such a short first gear, they're either going back to a taller FD ratio, like the 3.358 or first gear will top out somewhere around the low to mid 20 mph range with the current 3.700 they're using and 7500 rpm redline.

I have the current 5AT with the 3.917 FD and with a 7100 rpm rev limiter, hit redline around 27 mph IIRC and I hit redline in 2nd around 56.
