G37 Vert - Good addition or further dilution of the line?
« on: August 16, 2008, 12:54:12 PM »

After driving the G37. I'm less than enthusiastic about about the convertible.  I'd much rather see a more aggressive model to compete with the M3, S4/5 and IS-F.  As much as I like Infiniti's vehicles, I probably won't find myself in another one until they have something that can compete on that level.

Here's the official images released by Infiniti.  No specs yet or word to how much weight has increased.

Quote
Note to the Lexus SC430: it is now beyond over for you. Infiniti, Nissan's BMW-hunting luxury brand, has unveiled the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible, a retractable hardtop 4-seater that preserves the Coupe's good looks even with its 3-piece folding metal roof neatly tucked out of sight, as you can see here. Power from the 3.7L V6 will be in excess of 320 horses, and numerous comparos against the BMW 335i convertible are inevitable. You can practically hear the buff mags reserving track time as we speak. Sunny Los Angeles will be the venue for the car's formal unveiling in November, and likely a fertile ground for sales when the time comes.

yeah they definitely did something to the rear around the brake lights.  I like it though.  Can't wait to see it in person, and see how it looks

My fear is it'll be softer and slower than the coupe already is.  G37 was just disappointing for me.  They need to do something to give it an edge.

oh i'm not arguing that a more powerful coupe/sedan in the lineup would be a lot more exciting, I'm just saying that this is a good looking convertible and a nice addition.

I think it looks pretty good, I like the fact it's a hard top. i agree though - it probably wont have enough 'edge'; that's what deterred me from the G37 when I was shopping. I would have rathered an S5 for the price.

Modified:

Although, the more I look at it.. something looks strange. Like there is something missing in the middle of the car...

PS: Oh yeah, good job Nissan. Take a car that's already been axed and claim you're better than it (SC430). Even if the SC430 was continued, I dont consider the G to be in the same class, honestly. It's complete luxury vs sport, lexus got the luxury part down on the SC430.. and Infiniti can do sport, and pseudo-luxury, but I highly doubt they'd be pitted head-to-head. Kind of like saying the G37 would be a competitor for the MB SL, or CL.

They're not even close in price though?  G37 will be slotted against the 335i and A4 cabrio.  A5 is already more expensive than the G37, so not sure how you're comparing the S5 to the G37.

They were comparing it to the SC430 which is a $66+K car. Smiley

The G's I was looking at were in the $46-$47K mark and didnt feel like 'near $50k cars'. Replace S5 with A5 in my sentence if you wish - i'd rather an A5 than a G37 for the price. A fairly optioned out A5 is  $53,065.00 and feels a good bit more like a $50K car. The S5 being the next step beyond that...

i didnt know the SC was being discontinued;

in any case the G37 shouldn't feel like a 50k car... more like a 40k car cause thats what people are paying for it, sure the STICKER says 46k, but comparing it to a 66k Lexus is kinda like your IS-F vs M45 thread.

Yes - the difference being, nissan made the comment about the SC430 in some serious manner. My IS-F vs M45 was quite clearly titled "apples and oranges".

it wasn't nissans comment.  Its from autoblog, which means a wannabe editor/car mag writer made the comment.  they make all sorts of outrageous claims on that site.

And in theory, if this car is sporty with decent luxury appointments, the idea that people will flock to it and its much lower price tag over the SC430 isn't too far off the mark I'd say.

Its like the comparo between the Genesis and an LS460, sure they luxury definition isn't equal, but for 1/2 the price you know lexus will lose some sales because of it.

Exactly, it was an Autoblog comment, not an official press release from Infiniti.

I don't like the path the coupe has taken in general. The sedan is on track.

Boy, in the side view, the butt on that thing is seriously swole up, as they'd say in W. Virginia.
