55mph vs 60-70mph
« on: June 17, 2008, 01:42:53 PM »

Thanx Ohmy for getting me back up on line. Yeah, role playing "whatsmagame" can really take a lot out of ya', especially yer nerves..!!  Roll Eyes  The gallery now comes up too.

I had a chance to take my M along the Columbia River, relatively flat and a 60mph speed limit for about 40 miles. Since I was in no rush, I tried slowing down to 55mph to see what kind of fuel mileage I might get. My normal around 60-70mph is about 24. I was able to get about 27 miles per on cruise control w/the air conditioner on. That's a 13% increase; not too bad. I remember when we had the oil crisis and we all had to slow down to 55 to conserve.

I wonder why we don't do the same this time around. I guess Bush's cronies would cringe, not enuf billions in their pockets...

I'd drive slower but I've got things to see and people to do.

i gotta pimp my ride... so I drive everywhere at about 14mph.  j/k.

I too tested this out not too long ago.  best mpg I've seen on my car over a substantial length of travel is about 24mpg.  it was the same at 45mph, 55mph, and 75mph.  I wanna do another test now though, since my tachometer reading is different since I installed the new rims.  I tested it on one of those police radar setups in the neighborhood and it was perfect... but I want to try and pace it with my wife... see if its truly accurate.

(All these tests were with A/C on, and I have 5AT)

We had a thread about this in one of the other car forums (can't recall which) awhile back.

Contrary as it may seem to some people, some cars get optimum highway mileage at higher speeds. My LS460 is like that, and so were my BMW's - 540i's and 740i. It's all a function of the balance between coefficient of drag, engine rpms, ECU "tuning", gearing, etc., but it is true.

On a recent 3500-mile trip in the LS, I was getting 29-30 at 80 on the interstate, but when we went to a secondary highway across 400 miles of Nevada at an average of 60-65 mph, my mileage dropped to about 27. Back on the interstate, it went back to the high 20's and low-30's. It wasn't a matter of hills or traffic (hey, this was the Nevada desert!), so I can only assume the car is just optimized for more speed.

I had the same kind of experience with my Beemers, too. The best mileage I ever saw in the 740i was blasting across Montana back when there was no posted speed limit. Ran 90+ across there, and my autobahn runner turned in the 28's. Sweet.

I suspect the higher revs and sporty nature of the M work against it in high-speed running, because my M45 was like that, too.

Cruising along @ 40mph I was able to sustain 28.2 mpg late @ night along the same stretch of the Columbia River. It was cooler and I didn't have the AC on. I also read somewhere that these four wheeled buggies get better gas mileage in cooler vs hotter temps. If I rode along @ 40mph in daytime traffic, I'd save gas, but be someone's statistic for death by  road rage..!

Yeah, well I'm not going to be cruising @ either 40mph or 100; somewhere in between. Hell, I bought this machine because I loved it from a far (vicariously thru the posts I read for so long), and now that its in my garage, the hell w/the gas prices, I'm cruising! But it is fun to see just how it can do just sipping rather than slurping.

I guess that's one of the few good things about florida.. you can get relatively balanced gas mileage on the interstate if you try. 95% of the state is completely flat. Really, really flat. Flat. Did I mention it's flat?

PS.. you have an M35.. the gas mileage isnt THAT bad in that! Smiley

Yup-sounds like you did mention flat. How flat?

My M in town tho @ about 19mph average gets about 12mpg if I just drive as I normally do. I haven't tried any conservation steps in town; too busy going somewhere. I always use 92 octane.

Wenatchee isn't totally flat-there are some hills, but its not mountainous (it is a word!). Yeah, 12mpg on a good day. Tell me about it. Hell, I don't complain-I didn't buy it for the mpg. An M45 would have been overkill. I've driven 4 and 6 bangers all my life. Back in the '70's I drove an 80hp Saab 99E and had more fun in it than you can imagine. Of course I was also 30 odd years younger, and a lot more limber... Shocked

Are you heavy on the right foot or is your car just getting particularly bad gas mileage? 12MPG in the M35x is pretty horrendous - I think. Not from the perspective that "OMG I'M GETTING BAD GAS MILEAGE I HAVE TO SELL MY CAR!" but more so from the fact it seems like something could be wrong? Smiley

Stopping and starting every block and running up and down the hills here in San Francisco, I get 14.5 consistently.
Coincidentally when I drove down to LA and average 90+ I got the same fuel economy.

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong. On another site (we won't mention) we explored the low mileage I and others got and it was not unusual. I actually bought the machine well aware of this fact. What surprises me is that I can get 28.2mpg out of it @ 40mph, 26 @ 55mph and 24.3 @ 70mph.

These machines were not built for gas mileage, but luxury and response; which is expensive...
