Quote
You've seen the computerized pics Infiniti released at the official "virtual" debut of the redesigned 2011 Infiniti M last month at Pebble Beach. But today we spent some time on public roads with an actual rear-drive 2011 Infiniti M56 and an all-wheel-drive 2011 Infiniti M37x.

We can't tell you how these midsize luxury sedans drive or give you detail specs on them today. But browse through the photos and you'll get a feel for how they look on the road and some of the features they have.

For example, the M56, which gets a 5.6-liter V8 making over 400 hp, is available with a sport package, and our particular M56 Sport wore 20-inch wheels and Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. Navigation system graphics appear to be sharper as well, and the interiors look a little less hard-edge than the current generation.

Although we drove the AWD M37x, there will be certainly be a rear-drive version that slots below that. Look for about 325 hp from its 3.7-liter V6. And expect a 7-speed automatic transmission to be standard on all flavors of the 2011 Infiniti M.

More photos after the jump. Note that the badges are covered on these pre-production cars. The M56 Sport is black with a light interior. The M37x is dark gray with a dark interior.

Some of the angles look really nice but others not so much.  I'm not digging the front end that much.  It keeps reminding me of the new Maxima.

Agreed.. it's kind of sad to see them almost taking steps backwards and making the cars overlap as they used to (infiniti just being rebranded nissans); except now it's a wholly different car (infiniti), that LOOKS the same as the car that costs 2/3rds (nissan).. Sad

I am not seeing any buttons for suspension control much to my dismay, but hopefully they are in there somewhere...
I'm wondering if the M56 shown is a sport model; I am guessing so. It has a different front lower air-dam configuration along w/ foglight changes. I wonder if it's specific to the sport package or the M56 itself. I am also disappointed to see the loss of the old quad exhaust. I would have like to seen that as part of the sport package or at least standard equipment on the M56...

Also, no more fender mounted side marker/turn signal lights.. kind of disappointing. Assuming they are replaced with some sort of mirror-signal. The car is looking less and less sporty as I analyze it. The only 'sporty' trait is the one I'm not fond of.. it looks like the car is 90% hood (before the A pillar) and 10% car. No more signature dual ring LED tails either. I loved those.. mesmerizing.

I'm not sure what Infiniti's doing. I'm not so sure they know, either. Lets hope this is "what the masses want" because it appears they are losing their enthusiast following and going for a more toned-down look.... ala Lexus.

* PS: I know it's pre-production, but I hope they finish up those ugly speaker covers. I can't imagine they are going to production like that. Both front and rear covers look AWFUL.

Yup...I didn't care for the 370z when pics surfaced but now I'm in love with them. If I didn't need a backseat, that would be my next purchase.

Its actually not the HR engine... its the VVEL (mine has the HR engine), but the 5.6L in the car is truly spectacular... can't wait to see THOSE numbers!

This thing has gotten my attention. The V-8 will have 420hp and the V-6 327hp. Seven-speed tranny. Maybe ... just maybe ... they'll have the good sense to use those cogs to make it cruise at something below 3,000rpm at 60. I mean, calm that thing down, Infiniti! Maybe it'll even get decent mileage on the road if they do.

Unlike Oz, I'm glad to see the loss of things like the quad pipes (boy racer!) and hokey stuff like side markers (Euro wannabes). And thank God, the tail lights aren't comically huge things crawling up the trunklid like on my old '06. The car is actually beginning to look classy and grown up and maybe even worth the big price tag.

Just wish it wasn't going to be April before they debut. I'd consider trading the Lex for one if I could give it a drive today (it's been 2 years and the itch has set in). And I actually think I'd give the V-6 a serious look this time. 327hp and direct injection, coupled with a 7-spd might just make it a pretty quick car.

Bring it on!

The V6 is actually getting a little more attention than the V8. I am extremely disappointed with a 5.6L only pushing 420HP.

As for the rest of your commentary.. poo on you Tongue

Oddly enough - I was looking at the review of this again last night. I too am getting that... err.. itch? Smiley I still want to see this car in person though before I can even remotely begin to make a decision......

 lol

Was it the boy racer or the Eurowannabe in you that made you say that?

A little of both Tongue

Most boy racers can't afford quad pipes, sadly. The quad pipes look good; I think they should be included on the M56 sport only. Smiley

I'm not feeling it in the looks department to be honest.  The engine sounds great though.

Didn't like much, tbh.  I like the front view, looks like the new FX, so that's a plus for me.  But that's it.

The sides look strange, flimsy, like cloth, or a tent blowing in the wind.  Or is it just fat?

I liked the quad pipes.  What I can't possibly tolerate is BMW's shark fins for GPS/Sat antenna.  THAT is cheesy.
