Forced Induction: Infiniti, where are you?
«
on:
January 27, 2010, 11:36:35 PM »
With many large manufacturers (BMW, Merc, Audi, Jag, Acura, FORD etc) moving towards or returning to forced induction (turbo, super) I can't help but wonder where Infiniti (and lexus for that matter) are at this party? For some reason the idea of the M being a TT V6 rather than a V8 seems quite feasible, and perhaps even FUN...

Why not a TT V8 too? Or a TT v12, like the SL600/AMG 65
Frankly, I think it will bring more prestige to the brand to introduce a v12 than a ttv6 for enthusiasts. Why Lexus doesn't have yet a v12 I don't know. Infiniti could beat Lexus to it, with a relatively small, high rev V12, like some Jags, I think the XKE had a 3.8 or 4.2 V12?
Nothing beats the sound of a V12. Give me that over a TT V6 anyday (but for a track day/strip).

Yeah, but aren't the new government regulation pushing back on anything over a V6+?

This isn't the 90s husrt.... hell will freeze over before a main stream car co like infiniti wojuld come out with a v12. We will see 12v systems from infiniti before a v12. I do however think they are missing the mark by having a econ oriented 4cyl turbo under the v6 but I have a feeling a hybrid will come before a 4cyl. Introducing a tt6 would obviously be the easiest thing to do bc of all of their knowlege w 6s, the m however isn't the sled for it. Not at first anyway. They need a low production sport version of the g to iron out the kinks. Then when people are more ok w the idea of a 6 in a flagship (let's face it the q isn't coming)

Rumor: Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) is coming this year
«

I totally take credit for this, assuming it happens. Surely Infiniti is dilligently monitoring CarFAQ to see what I want.

Hot on the heels of the recent revelation that Infiniti is working on a duo of new G-based vehicles slated to debut at this year's Pebble Beach extravaganza, we've come across a trademark filing by Nissan North America for "IPL." What's IPL you ask? Infiniti Performance Line, a new catalog of in-house developed upgrades which – according to the filing – will include everything from air filters to cat-back exhaust systems, and – more intriguingly – "automotive engine parts, namely turbochargers and superchargers."
The approach is likely to be similar to how NISMO develops and markets parts for Nissan or, more accurately, Lexus' launch of its F-Sport performance line.
This new line of performance parts will likely be unveiled this August in Pebble Beach and be fitted to the G37 coupe. How extensive the modifications are remains to be seen, but as previously reported, one of the models set to debut will be "performance oriented," and if forced induction is part of the package, we're anxiously awaiting our rendezvous with the modded coupe this summer.

During my last visit to the Infiniti dealer they did make note of the fact that a new G was coming soon, and much to my dismay continued to explain that it would be targeted to compete with the IS 250. I think that hurts a lot of the current G owners for resale - as in a lot of cases, people purchased the IS 250 rather than the 350, and I suspect they would do the same in the name of cost for the G if they were given the chance. Essentially: I think it dilutes the product (G) now.
The performance part is interesting, though. I honestly don't have a whole lot of faith in FI on a G with an AT, though, based on my current Infiniti 7AT experience...

i still think your experience with the 7AT is specific to the FX. There isn't mass hysteria in either the M or G forums complaining about the gear box. Not to say you (or other FX drivers) don't have problems, just saying its probably the application, not the transmission.
I'd love to see the G (or any infiniti) with a TT or SC. I'm keen on the idea, but not the aftermarket piece that voids my warranty, so this would be right up my alley.

I know this is only a VERY small sampling but apparently FX35'ers are seeing it too, and someone w/ a G37 made a similar complaint... :|
In all honesty, i'm more disappointed than anything. I just want it to be right.

This is very interesting for sure but couldn't they come up with a better name than IPL. Are they going to have lovely IPFreely, I mean IPL, badges on some of their cars now? It sounds like a courier company.

Haha. I am pretty confident they will use a different name in the end.

I like the Nismo name for Nissan. Maybe they could use ISMO for Infiniti. that way when you ask how much that "special" Infiniti is the salesman can say "IsMo". Nyuk, Nyuk....sorry.
