Hot Seat
« on: October 12, 2008, 05:06:36 PM »

It was about 34 degrees F. this morning. For the first time this season I turned on the driver's seat heater. Within about 2-3 minutes the seat got hot-not just warm. How's that? It seemed last winter it took longer and the ambient temperature of the cabin had to first get get warm, before the seats went same.

I thought the Peltier Effect was based upon using the ambient temp and transferring it to the seat? Ohmy, anyone, what's up?

Well, yeah. But it took a while before-now it's a lot faster. Maybe because it was 34 F and not 10F ? So many have complained that the seat heaters don't work-but they do. It just seemed more instantaneous, kinda' like the seats w/the electrical grids. Just possibly my derrière was also prewarmed too..?

Forget it-just different than last winter.

Did you pass gas simultaneously? Wink

Someone on FA did a huge "study" on the seat coolers/heaters, I think. Needless to say, on the rare occasions I needed the heaters in north florida they were a huge disappointment. Took way too long to heat. I like the "standard" seat heaters better. My IS doesnt have ventilated seats; just heated.. but now I dont have anywhere cold to use them!

Well, my wife says I can be an alternative source of energy all by myself...

The damn things do work, just not as quickly as the "standard" w/electrical coils et al.

The seats do take sometime to warm up.....

I was just commenting to my daughter this evening that my wife's Yukon seats will burn your tail within a few minutes.  My M on high and the seat takes at least 10min to warm up enough to notice.

I agree with AudrayATC, my BMW is way faster on the seat heat than is the M45 - which takes 10 minutes to feel anything. This is a function of the current flowing, how far under the surface of the seat the coil is, and the insulating factors in between. On BMWs they are affixed on the internal side of the leather, very close, no insulation other than that rendered by the leather itseilf.

You know what else i've noticed?
Car is blowing hot air within just few minutes from startup!
No other cars i've had were this quick
Lately i found out it's how the car's cooling system is setup

Quote
Newer cylinder head coolant passageways combined with thermostats which allow coolant flow throughout the head (until it's warmed up to the proper temperature), and pumps which are arranged to pump that quickly warming coolant to the heater core are the reason.
In years past the coolant would circulate through the 'cold' engine (block and cylinder head) and take much longer to warm up. Then the t'stat would open and the freezing cold coolant in the radiator would slug the block and the whole process would have to start over. Some thermostats today are controlled by-are you ready for this- the ECU! No longer do they just sit there dumbly expanding and contracting based on the coolant temperature. Now the ECU can precisely control the metering to help prevent overheating, etc.

The IS heating system (A/C) isn't too shabby. I couldnt give "exact" calculations on how long it takes to start pumping warm air, but its not terribly long.

The "traditional" seat heaters in the IS also trump my previous M45's cooling/heating system (which I realize is a different animal, but still... )
