its not really a rating... its how many problems are experienced with every 100 vehicles... I'm more curious as to:

what constitutes a "problem" because, for example, a piece of rubber from my sunroof falling out = 1 problem, just like a complete transmission failure = 1 problem, but in my mind I don't rate that the same way

Good point...  and the interesting thing is that since you pointed it out... It is titled "problems per 100 vehicles"  So does that mean anywhere above or maybe i should say below Mercedes-Benz... You're guranteed at least one problem?  HAHAHAH

I think it means unless you drive a porsche, infiniti, or lexus (to be more specific) you can expect to have at least one issue (on average)

Or if you know someone with an infiniti (like Oz) who's had like 10 problems... then you might not have any... considering the average of < 1 per vehicle, haha

I want to make sure that Oz always buys the same cars as me. If his propensity for attracting issues remains constant, I won't have any problems.....!

Gosh that kind of sucks...  Makes you think, an automobile is the 2nd most expensive investment most people make in they're lives.  But, manufacturers don't up their quality standards for this important investment people are willing to make...

You're right...  I've seen how they build houses now a days...  Whats interesting is that about 2 miles from my house they tore down an old complex sitting on a big lot to make room for like 10 houses...  Although they still like kinda shoddy...  The walls are all pre-fab and i wonder if that helps control quality a little bit better...

In any event... yes, quality is key and its sad that people pour their lives into these investments and the companies that produce them aren't focusing on quality...  I mean, its funny...  When my dad recently purchased his new car, the sales manager was offering an extended service plan...  I told him, "What, you expect this car to fail on us?  We drop this much money on a car and you're offering a service plan!!!"  sheesh...  I mean i know insurance, warrantys, gap insurance is what makes the dealer money but... come on now... why don't you sell us some confidence in this damn car!!! HAHAHAH

^ you have an excellent point there.  I'd say thats what BMW is trying to do with the free service.  ONE: either keep people from avoiding their brand because of reputation for trouble, or TWO: put it out there like: we're so confident in our cars being trouble free, that we'll pay for whatever goes wrong.  Either way, I think its a good strategy.

BMW has been doing this for years
Maintenance cost would probably kill all the pleasure of owning the car.
It's nice to have wipers, brake pads, rotors, synthetic oil changed at no cost
Pretty much not spending any $ on anything until 4yrs/50K

BTW, i'm very surprized to see Benz on top of the list
