Where do they come up with the numbers for this? The residuals on Infinit as a whole seem to be collectively poor, the G is the only thing in their line retaining value that I can see. The M has plummetted. The depreciation on my car was expected but has quickly worsened.

For instance:

A 2006 Infiniti M45 Sport, loaded, with 71500 miles. Approximate purchase price $55K.

Trade in value:

Excellent | Good | Fair
$19,175  | $17,660 | $15,045

A 2006 Lexus GS 430, well equipped, with 71,500 miles. Approximate purchase price $58K

Trade in value:

Excellent | Good | Fair
$26,600  | $24,770 | $21,425

That's a pretty substantial difference given the fact INFINITI won the ALG award. What imaginary numbers does ALG base their figures off exactly? From what it looks like to me, the GS is about $6,000 ahead...

Yup.. sorry for the omission. Using KBB for trade values because that's what all the dealers swear "they are bound to", and using intellichoice to get the approximate purchase price as equipped. Intellichoice, Edmunds, etc, all come up with even HIGHER trade in values than KBB, but the M is always at the low end of the list, by far.

Its in your quoted statement: "forecasted" in other words, they have no idea, but they're making a prediction... just like the weatherman's forecast it could be way off.  I know they have some historical basis to go on... but honestly if I were the one forecasting residual values on a yearly basis, I'd just pick BMW every year, and I'd probably be more accurate.

Just take it as a gift and lease an Infiniti... this is the only area where it even comes to play as far as I'm concerned... buying one because of this rating is VERY optimistic!

yeah a gift, as in, high predicted residual means your lease end value will be higher than low lease end value.  ie:

Lexus GS MSRP 56,000
predicted value in 3 years= 20,000
net = -36000 /36 lease payments = lease payment of 1000

Infiniti M MSRP 56,000
predicted value in 3 years = 30,000
net = -26000 /36 lease payments = lease payment of 722 dollars

make sense?

Yes, I understand the concept of leasing. ALG coming up with artificial residuals for cars for people who finance is not terribly helpful, though. Smiley

Yes, but it is still related to the overall depreciation of the value. Particularly, it calculates what the car is going to be worth when the lease is OVER. Smiley

yep but a lease depreciation is guaranteed.... financed is not.  And like I said... its predicted... this year the prediction is good! you should see if you can find out what the lease outlook was back in 2006

The lease outlook in 2006 was even better than it was for '08. Ask Trincap. Smiley
