Infiniti Essence Arrives in the U.S.
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:39:57 AM »

From Edmunds Insideline.  Click through for more pics and a video.  It is very interesting that Edmunds kept harping on the fact that this concept can move under its own power.  Also, the supposed 3.7L direct injection V6 combined with an electric motor under the hood of the Essence is extremely top-secret.  Interesting stuff.

Infiniti Essence Arrives in Los Angeles, Part 1: It Has Its Own Crate

Remember the Infiniti Essence? It was the stunning, 592-horsepower concept car from this year's Geneva auto show that had everybody asking, "Is this Infiniti's GT-R?"

We still don't know the answer, but we do know that late last week, the Infiniti Essence arrived in the United States for the very first time -- it's headed to Pebble Beach for the Concours d'Elegance. Inside Line was in Torrance, California, for the official "uncrating." And we have video and photos.

Infiniti had a special crate built just for the Essence, because, well, it had to. At over 77 inches wide (about 3 inches wider than a GT-R), this car won't fit in a standard shipping container. So the Essence travels in its own enormous steel case, and because it's a multi-million-dollar one-off concept, that case is loaded onto a cargo plane rather than an ocean freighter.

It sounds like a lavish existence, but when the Essence shows up in Torrance, all we see is a big gray box strapped down to a flat bed attached to an old International cab. It looks vulnerable. And getting the crate off the truck won't be easy.

...and Part 2

The paint on the Infiniti Essence concept car looks pretty close to molten metal, like a Super Silver Nissan GT-R with 100 more coats of paint. It makes the car vulnerable to almost everything, and anyone who touches the car has to wear special white gloves. The paint, and various other non-production-spec adhesives, also makes the Essence very heat-sensitive, so it will ride to Pebble Beach in a climate-controlled truck.

First, though, it has to come off its pallet. The logistics staff deploys the pallet's built-in ramps (one for each wheel), which enable the Essence's caretaker, Nissan's Andy Parkin, to ease it down the ramp. Controls within the car allow Parkin to raise the front suspension 1.6 inches and the rear 1 inch to the improve the Infiniti's none-too-favorable breakover angle.

Parkin removes his shoes before getting behind the wheel of the Essence, but the one-off concept car starts right up.

Yeah they did. lol.

I feel like this Pebble Beach unveiling is make or break for Infiniti.  They are at a crossroads and they really need this new M to be really special.  I have faith in their new design language, that is if they stick close to the essence concept, but everything else has to be there, quality, fit and finish, etc.  Also, I think they need to change their advertising campaign slightly.  That's for a different thread, though.

One thing is certain: this car is unmistakably Infiniti.   You can give them kudos to that, few can say they have a grip on their own style (like BMW, Mercedes, few others).

Wow, looking @ the nose of the thing reminds me of the first time I got up close to the nose of an F-4 Phantom @ the air base @ DaNang, Republic of Vietnam. Like awesome power behind that baby.

I loved it.  Strange wings under the windows, looks like a tray from some angles, but if it has aero function (and most Infiniti stuff does), I can see it being copied later.  I simply loved the proportions, but it is still a concept, a just don't like the logo and the rear chromed spoiler, but overall, great.

What about the interior shots?  I loved the dash and clocks, want to see them in motion too.

For a multi-million dollar concept whose exterior you can't touch without white gloves, Infiniti really is parading this thing around.  It will have been at Goodwood, Pebble Beach, and then a 7-month tour across the U.S.  Not to mention the auto show circuit.  I don't remember the coupe concept being so visible after the Detroit Auto Show even though we know that was going to production.  Maybe this a normal thing and I'm just not "in the know" but I'm wondering if Infiniti is judging reaction to this concept, seeing if a production version might be viable.  After all, Lexus already has their LF-A in production and Caddy is talking about a halo of their own.

Yes, the background music was awful, and the video itself was boring.  It's nice to see it moving but that clip showed me nothing except the fact that, yes, the essence can move under it's own power.  I really like the essence concept itself though, except for the logo and grill.

Looks nice, especially profile and rear
Front has some minor imperfections
Bumper on the bottom is sculpted strangly, not really aerodynamic
Grill is too big
And what bothers me the most - huge Infiniti logo that looks out of place

Overall - nice!
