Infiniti Essence at Geneva
« on: March 03, 2009, 09:54:40 AM »

Its a gas/electric hybrid good for almost 600 hp with the twin turbo 3.7L V6.  Its big, to say the least and it has the custom LV luggage.  Supposedly its not anything that will come to production as a specific vehicle as much as its an indicator of the brand's design direction and is a symbol for what the Infiniti brand stands for, etc...

From the press release
Quote
ESSENCE: AN OVERVIEW
• A front-engined, two-seat, 600PS luxury coupe concept, 4.7m long
• First motor show preview of Infiniti's petrol/electric hybrid drivetrain
• Capable of vast speeds where conditions allow, zero emissions where they don't
• Rear-wheel drive for maximum driver involvement
• Fresh design language to influence future production models
• Previews new safety technology including Back-up Collision Prevention
• Minimalist and intensely driver-focused interior
• "New luxury" meets traditional Japanese craftsmanship
• Bespoke Louis Vuitton fitted luggage to maximise trans-continental capability

ESSENCE: THE CONCEPT
"An Essence owner is characterized by his or her fearless self confidence; he or she is an intellectual hero rather than just a successful money maker."
Francois Bancon, General Manager Advanced Product Planning

Essence began life not in the design studio but in Infiniti's product planning department. Francois Bancon, General Manager Advanced Product Planning, and his team might not, at the start of the project, have known how Essence would look, but they did know what it had to be, why it had to exist – and who it would appeal to.

"Essence is a brand icon," Francois Bancon said. "It is driven more by a conceptual approach than by any design execution. It is not just an object. It isn't a teaser for a new model. It is solely dedicated to Infiniti brand promotion, to demonstrate and advocate the Infiniti unique values."

The concept called for a very clear understanding of who the super-luxury coupe's potential customers would be. Painstakingly, Bancon and his team of advanced product planners built up a picture of a typical Essence owner. It was a profile that showed an uncompromising, risk-taking 42-year-old passionate about the best things in life, but equally passionate about not flaunting them. "These consumers don't need to demonstrate to others," said Bancon. "They are already at the next step of achievement that leads to rewarding themselves first."

Francois Bancon went on: "We wanted a new way of mixing various ingredients to get a car that was reserved but with a big presence, something trendy but also indicating the next trend. We wanted a car that aspired to become a cult. It had to be exclusive, smart and mysterious. For the driver, it had to sum up the six-word essence of Essence:

Everything I want, nothing I don't

Overall, I'm not really sure about this one so far.

I like it a lot...except for the oversized logo in the grille.

Loved the catamara style hood, the 370z wheels are very good looking, but they could have gone for the GT-R wheels, loved the LV luggage, and the trunk floor slids out like on the Mercedes wagon, nice touch.

Like a lot the rearview, but for the ugly G37 chrome bar (hate that on the Gs) and again the oversized logo/lettering.

Boy if one car needed serious debadging, this is one! LOL

B...They are definately 370z inspired....but if you look closer, they have a slight twist to the inner portion flowing into the split spokes!

I love all the suede. I'm assuming they made the two sides black and reddish so you could see the optional colors...Huh? I like the race-inspired suede steering wheel too...the top portion seems to high tho.

IS that brushed stainless steel in the cluster  sSig_goodjob

The more I look at this, the less I like it.  Definitely seems like it'll be a LONG time before I come back to Infiniti at this rate. Roll Eyes

I still laugh at this line of the press release.

Good point.  No need to bother with body panels when its as totally discordant as this. Smiley

This ends up looking kind of like Infiniti's bad attempt at making something like the Aston Martin One-77.  I think there were too many hands in the pot on this one and instead of letting good design rule, too many pet projects had to be featured here.  This makes the G37 coupe look stunning, and that's saying a lot!

Shame too, I loved the coupe concept back in 2007, they've been losing touch since.

I think I like this one.  I'm not sure on the name though.  Essence?  Sounds like a perfume.

Well, they certainly can't name it what it looks like.  A FX50 mercilessly raped a poor 370Z and this is the bastard offspring of said tragedy.  Its a big long winded.
