Infiniti M50 Coupe to take on 6-Series and E-Class Coupe?
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:23:22 AM »

Quote
BMW already has the 6-Series and Mercedes-Benz has just shown the new E-Class coupe.

If the rumors are true, Infiniti's Essence concept will show Infiniti's interpretation of a large luxurious coupe with a V8 engine. Infiniti has filled out its G range with a sedan, coupe, and upcoming convertible. It only makes sense that the 3rd generation Infiniti M include a coupe along with the sedan to compete with the two top German marks. BMW only sold 304 6-Series in January 2009 while Mercedes-Benz sold 601 CLK's during the same time period in the United States. Considering this is such a small market, is there really room for an Infiniti M37/M50 coupe? Or, could it be a great opportunity to cash in on a segment, in which there are some questionably styled products.

If its true... it'd be hard to make one uglier than the 6 series, lol.  But I'd question it.  Now is not the time to enter niche segments and Nissan recognizes that.

And Essence.  Gayest name for a vehicle ever, concept or not.  Want to take a ride in my Essence? LOL. Grin

Yeah, I'd think they'd have more luck shoving the V8 into the G coupe (or TT'ing it?).. that car at least has an established image.

Who cares about image?  It'd be a lot cheaper and that's the big thing. Wink  They could drop the V8 in there and have a good market if it came out in the $45-50k range.  Make a happy medium between cars like the 335i and M3 coupes and undercut the AMG models too.  But not be too far above the price of other high output models like the Camaro SS, G8 and Challenger which offer 400 hp V8's too.

In all honestly, if they're going to compete with the 6 series and CLK, they could just release an Infiniti version of the GT-R with the VK50VHR and hope that saves a couple bucks over the TT engine.  But they already killed the sedan they were talking about doing that with.

Image is everything. Smiley People steer away from things they are unfamiliar with, and flock to things they already know.

I wish they'd stuff a V8 or a TT V6 into the G sedan.

I'm hoping the Infiniti GT-R variant isn't forever dead...

^lol... thread delivers Wink

I think the M is much too big to just slap 2 doors on it.  They'd have to totally revise the car.  (they should be doing that for 2010 anyway, but I'm guessing at least a year delay in that endeavor)

Slap 4 doors then!  Oh, don't you like to see again 4 door convertibles?

Seriously though, I don't think the M is that big.   I can definitely see an M coupe, but I doubt it will be made.

The big problem with a M coupe is you just can't swap 4 doors for 2 doors.  Moving the B pillar back for proper coupe lines results in a total reengineering of the unibody for body strength.

I don't think that is that costly.  I mean, they did with the G/G coupe, Mercedes and BMW do it all the time (wagons, 3 series coupes, etc.).   The cost of marketing and the fear of not selling it must be much bigger.

Aren't they all the same FM platform?  Same engine, transmission and suspension (and soldering points for those parts)?  The rest is modified at will.  Even wheelbase is easily change with today's technology (see G35/350z).

If not, what's all those talk of FM platform all about?  And what about those euro-wagons?
