Infiniti Performance Line (IPL): DOA

Infiniti recently filed a trademark for the names "IPL" and "Infiniti Performance Line" for an upcoming AMG-like division offering "high-performance motor vehicle parts." It could launch as early as this summer. Twin-turbocharged G37S anyone?

That trademark listing by Nissan North America was filed in February and lists this under "Goods And Services:"

TT G37S. Talk about reaching for the stars. What did Infiniti really deliver?....

Infiniti IPL G Coupe: 348 HP Japanese Luxotourer

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2010/08/500x_infiniti_ipl_g_coupe.jpg

The much-rumored Infiniti Performance Line launched today with the Infiniti IPL G Coupe, a slightly more aggressive version of the standard G37S with a tweaked 348 hp V6 and "lets go racing" look. But will it please the Infiniti enthusiast?

Our dreams of a twin-turbocharged AMG-slaying Infiniti were for naught, as Infiniti seems interested in upping its fun quotiant by just a few degrees. It'll feel faster, thanks to a new dual exhaust replacing the old Y-pipe and a tweaked engine management system designed to let the horsepower top out at 7,400 rpm. As for being any faster, the moderate power boost (16 hp and 6 lb-ft) isn't going to send anyone to the 'Ring breaking records, but this doesn't seem to be the goal.

Anyone who complains about this not being an M3 is missing the point almost as much as someone saying it is. With a close-ratio 6-speed manual with a short-throw shifter and a "sport-tuned suspension" this may finally unshackle what is a competent but restrained luxury coupe. The G37S coupe is a fine car, but it's lacked an aggressive character you can find in its competitors.

Performance specs to come, but the real challenge will be if it feels right.

Yeah I don't even like the looks of it, much less the price premium on no change in performance.

Not a smart way to showcase the brand.  They should have gone crazy like Toyota with the IS-F.  Put the 56 engine in it.

+1
Bore out the engine a bit atleast, 4-4.2L would be a nice step

Pretty much agreed it is a fizzle.

But they did make it pretty clear up front that IPL would involve only bolt-on's, so the dreams of turbos and superchargers were pipe dreams anyway.

Well, If you bolt on the M56 engine+transmission, how much more of a bolt-on can you be?  What would happen if one inadvertently put a G37 I. The M56 assembly line?  What, it wouldn't fit?  I doubt it.  :-)

I bet it would take a small miracle to fix the new 5.6L into the existing G's engine bay.. Sad Much like Lexus - they would have to stretch/widen the front end/track and I don't think they want to spend the money on R&D... it really would be awesome to see a limited production G sedan/coupe with the 5.6L, though (or a detuned powertrain from the GT-R). It's sad that Infiniti are going to leave this as a dream only...

I don't know about small miracle, aren't they all the same platform?  Lexus is a different story.

Now if they do need some R&D to add performance, it seems to me that Infiniti (not Nissan) is the place to put money into.  Infiniti Performance Line = Budget Performance line?  All the while Nissan/Nismo gets all the turbos and cool stuff?.

Doesn't make much sense to me.  Better drop performance altogether then.
