Infiniti has officially announced plans to debut its first hybrid sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November. The M35 hybrid first appeared – badged as the Nissan Fuga hybrid – at last fall's Tokyo Motor Show, propelled by Nissan's first in-house hybrid system. The M35  is powered by a retuned Atkinson cycle version of the 3.5-liter VQ V6 paired with a 50-kilowatt electric motor and a lithium ion battery pack that uses the same type of cells that power the Nissan Leaf.

The motor is a disc-type unit packed between the engine and the six-speed automatic transmission in a similar fashion to the systems from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Porsche. Infiniti claims the M35 will deliver V8 performance with the fuel consumption of a four cylinder. While the Fuga is set to go on sale in Japan this fall, the M35 hybrid arrives in the U.S. next year as a 2012 model.

1. I don't think there were much difference between v-6 and v-8 fuel consumption as far as Infiniti is concerned?  I know *I* never get the amazing numbers I've seen people get on the VQ35...specially since I don't do much uncongested highway miles.

So this claim V-6 fuel consumption, well, I suspect it's not that difference from the v8 anyway.

2. Which v8 they have in mind?  The 4.5 or the 5.0 or the 5.6L engine?   Hummm...Again, funny numbers, IMHO all hybrids are some kind of cheaters anyway, no way real world MPG is close to the EPA numbers...

yeah my mileage at best is probably 22 highway, but interestingly i avg 20 city/hwy.  Guess those extra gears aren't doing that much for me.  but I'm on the VQ35 engine.  Maybe the VVEL 3.7 would help out some.

I wonder what the thinking is behind the idea of shifting the entire Infiniti lineup to hybrid systems.  Is it a good idea?  Are any of Infiniti's competitiors doing likewise?  Does shifing to hybrids mean making a hybrid optional for each product?  Is the technology advanced enough to make hybrids cost effective without affecting performance?
