One other "strategy" is to go ahead and lease for 2 years or 3 years, knowing you will exceed the mileage limits, then trade out of the lease before it matures.

Yes, you'll take a hit on trade-in value for "high miles", but if you take good care of your car you'll still come out better than on a so-called high-mileage lease (anything over 15,000 miles/yr) ... and certainly better than paying a big mileage penalty to a leasing company.

At the rate you pile on miles, you'd probably be trading every 18 months or so ... otherwise, you'll have too many miles to make it an attractive trade.

How receptive are dealers to buy you out of a lease though?  From what I understand you're responsible for all the monthly payments plus the residual... thats a large chunk of change when dealers are trying to low-ball you on trade-in value.

Hell I'm interested too... my car is immaculate and under mileage, and dealers are trying to GIVE cars away because sales suck so much.  I'd be happy to let them buy me out, I just didn't think it was something they did very often.

Hey, hey, HEY! Don't go calling me an expert. I have my pride, you know.

Anywho, there's not as much mystery about leases as some people (present company excluded, of course) seem to think. It's nothing more than another way to finance a car. I've traded out of every lease I've had, except for one. Well, make that two ... I sold one leased car car outright 3 months after I got it. But no one ever blinked an eye at the dealer end.

A leased car has a payoff amount at any given time, just like a financed car. You simply have to get enough for the car to take care of the payoff amount, or make up the difference. If you're like me, you never got enough trade-in value for your financed cars to handle the payoff either, so you're usually no more upside-down in a lease than in a purchase.

The IS350 I sold after only 90 days cost me a little over $3,000 "penalty", but I considered myself lucky to get out that light. Most of my other lease trades netted me about what the payoff amount was, so I've rarely had to pony up any meaningful money.

Just look on your monthly statement and get your payoff amount. Then check kbb.com or edmunds or whatever, and see what your car is worth as a trade. Subtract the difference if any and that's where you stand. Dealers have no problem paying off your lease after you buy from them, as it's no different to them than paying off a bank or other financing institution.

I don't think my statements include a payoff amount... It just says how much my monthly payment is and the date of lease termination.

I've been eyeing something lately.... and if they're willing to deal... I might lose the infiniti, lol

Well, if your payoff amount isn't shown (mine is, every month), a quick call to the automated Cust. Service line will get it.

top secret stuff, LOL

Didn't want to derail the thread, and not sure if its serious or a fleeting desire that came about cause I got back from HIN yesterday.

I'm going to email someone and see what happens... it could be that the situation would be counterintuitive at this point in time regarding getting out of the lease.
