Silly update I got:
Quote
Infiniti Teases New M Sedan, Pebble Beach Debut Confirmed
NISSAN’S LUXURY ARM Infiniti
has released the first teaser image of its upcoming replacement for the M45 luxury sedan, a car which will be sold in Japan, Europe, the United States and possibly Australia.
Infiniti doesn’t mention any technical details of the new M, but the company has confirmed the model will be making its official debut at a private event at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 15.
The stylised rendition of the new M’s profile above
shows that Infiniti is breaking new ground with its latest road car, borrowing heavily from the sweeping lines of its recent Essence concept (below).
Powertrain options will be announced after the car’s Pebble Beach debut, but we can expect to see the 370Z’s VQ37VHR V6 and possibly a 5.0 litre VK50DE V8 from the FX50 SUV underhood. Like its predecessor, the new M sedan will be rear-wheel-drive.
The new Infiniti M is locked in for the US and European markets, and the car will likely head to Japan badged as a Nissan.
The global financial crisis has delayed Nissan Australia’s efforts to bring the upmarket brand back to this country, but Nissan spokesman Jeff Fisher told TMR that an Infiniti revival remains on the company’s long-term agenda.

I can't believe they can't see that the top picture is the same as the vehicle in the bottom picture, which is the "Essence".. if Infiniti revises the M to look like that then color me surprised.

Yeah, it's clearly the profile of the Essence concept. It would be out of character for the M to have that profile, unless it's supposed to be like the Porsche Panamera.

the one aspect I always had "issues" with regarding the M is the "high" or "tall" look of the M. Parked next to a Y34 02-03 M45 which has a much, much lower roofline our M looked just too high. I am not tall so I don't need the height above me, which there is a lot of. I just wish the roof line was a bit lower, think like the image above, the roofline looks lower - sleeker...

They will...or at least borrow heavily from the Essence. Look at the pictures below:

As yet, Nissan remains unsure whether to replace Infiniti’s former flagship, the Q45. Infiniti's U.S. office wants a $70,000–$80,000 car to seal its position as an aspirational luxury performance brand against Lexus, BMW, and Audi. The idea is being explored; recently, dealers from around the world visiting Japan went wild when shown a Q concept which was basically a four-door extrapolation of the fabulous Essence show car.
This is assuming that the Q will ever come back. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the M
will
become Infiniti's flagship (as it is likely to grow in size) and the car that was shown in Japan was the new M. I'm also guessing a new model will eventually come in under the G. I just think the Q was a marketing disaster and they won't bring it back but I'd love to be totally wrong.

I agree with you mostly - I almost updated my post earlier but didnt have time. It would have been along the lines of 'If infiniti wanted to place the "four door coupe" game with mercedes (CLS), porsche (panamera), then they could do an excellent job based on the essence.. but I think it would need to be a NEW model; not under the M-line"
So, we'll see. I expect the new M will follow the Essence cues, which are FX cues as well. I'm thinking we're going to see the stretched headlights and larger grill that the FX/essence wear.... we'll see. Infiniti is not doing so great (along with many other car companies) so they better pull this off right.
[Edit]
Just saw the C&D link and read it.. interesting stuff. Too bad they aren't going to drop a TT M in our lap. That would be sweet.

Going to have to disagree with you on this one, slightly. I think the car looks great height wise until you hit the B pillar.. the back-end is a little too tall. The OLD M is a completely different beast, so it's kind of hard to compare height of them side-by-side because they are so radically different looking (to me)

Good call since all three vehicles were being designed at roughly the same time. I'd love to see the headlights from the Essence find their way on the M virtually untouched. I wouldn't rule out the TT/Hybrid engine coming from the Essence. There is still talk about it being a possibility. Plus, I looked through the trademark office and "M50" is not registered. It was, but Infiniti killed it in March or May of this year. So, I wonder if there will be a V8 variant at all. A direct injection V6 with a TT/hybrid performance model would be sweet.

I'm not so much into the hybrid performance side of things, and I'd like a TT.. but from a simplicity standpoint, i'd love to see a V8.
I see what you are saying, they did indeed drop the M50 trademark (along with a ton of others: M30
D
, M40, M50, M55, M56, M60).. but interestingly, the M37 trademark is still active......

Interesting stuff, very good idea to look at that. No M50, huh? Strange...

Yep, I agree as far as simplicity goes. However, As you mentioned, every other V8 possibility has been abandoned according to the trademark records. I'm pretty much stumped as to what the performance variant could be. Even though other companies are downsizing engines a bit, they are still finding ways (usually via forced induction) to get decent power. Friday will be here soon enough.
I'm curious as to what the powerplants will be and how high quality the interior materials / fit and finish will be more than the exterior design. I'm pretty sure Infiniti has that down. I hear that the interior is supposed to be class leading. We'll see.

My concern is - if Infiniti do make this a "Q" replacement, there will be a significant price increase and it will basically be a repeat of what they just did to the FX. Sure - it's a great vehicle, but it's also mildly overpriced at the end of the day.

I dont know if i'd call it overpriced considering its competition and the same can probably be said about the next M. Sure they may jack the starting price up to around 50k, but then the next 5series will probably start nearer 60k and that will mean its still a bargain.
