Want a better Infiniti?
« on: May 26, 2008, 02:25:15 PM »

move to Europe!  Tongue    Perplexing that Japan (homeland) and America (INFINITI homeland) would get ignored while Europe (untested market) gets the luxury treatment!

Yes, the Europeans are luckier than Americans when it comes to cars. Heck they are even lucky when it comes to getting the hottest cell phone technology. Infiniti is ready to launch in Europe, and Nissan engineers are making about 300 to 500 modifications on each car to prepare it for launch in October.

To name a couple of changes we may not be too pissed off about; the push-button switches on the center console will be replaced by knobs like the ones in a Mercedes or BMW. They will also get a new heated-seat system and stronger windshield wipers. Not that bad right? Those are things that we can possibly live without having here on the stateside. Well wait until you read about what else the Europeans will be getting.

Infiniti European models will be fitted with new stabilizers and bigger brakes than their American counterparts. Nissan will also introduce a new 7-speed automatic transmission along with a V6 diesel engine around 2010 when the next-generation ‘M’ arrives.

Not only that, Infiniti’s V6 engines in Europe will be more powerful. While we see a 3.5 liter unit here on the G35 sedan; Europeans will enjoy a slightly larger 3.7 liter V6.

Why? Infiniti says that Europeans supposedly driver faster and they need cars that stand up to more high-speeds and wind noise. Yeah okay, that’s our ‘we believe you face.’ More like you need to stand strong next to Mercedes and BMW.

An excerpt from an Auto Channel article:

"With Infiniti sales in Europe targeted to begin from the fourth quarter of 2008, the initial focus will be on Infiniti’s unique, highly distinctive crossovers – the all-new Infiniti EX37 luxury coupe crossover and the all-new, second-generation Infiniti FX luxury sports crossover, which makes its world debut in March 2008 at the Geneva Auto Show. The Infiniti Europe line up will also include the new award winning, second-generation Infiniti G37 and G37 Coupé. Each Infiniti model will be fine-tuned for European customers’ unique needs, rigid quality standards and demanding European driving conditions."

The quoted Auto Channel article is basically an Infiniti press release.

According to Infiniti, Euorpean's "unique needs" are "rigid quality standards" and "demanding driving."  Does this mean that Infiniti thinks Americans "unique needs" are "not so good quality standards" and "lax driving."  My response is that it is not too smart to bite the hand that feeds you.

Americans have lower expectations.. look at american cars. Smiley I am pretty sure Nissan is playing off that. When the domestics set the bar so low...

I probably won't purchase another Infiniti as long as the European models are better equipped than what we have, particularly when its options we could / should get.  Its not like I'm going to get upset over the European mandated bumpers or diesel engines we're not getting.

It'd be one thing if it were minor changes such as headlight washers, rear fog lights and other Euro spec equipment.  Its another when its 7 speed autos, VQ37VHR engines, 14" brakes and other performance enhancements.

Until they make the US models like that, I wouldn't buy one out of anticipation that they would change the models, and still be mad if they didn't.  G37 Sedan with all the performance add-ons of the coupe would be killer.  Same applies to the EX, FX and M.

The US market may have made Infiniti what it is today, but Nissan's luxury arm is putting more power and better equipment into its vehicles destined for sale in Europe later this year. Engineers have made 300-500 changes per car, including tweaked styling, high-end knobs, bigger brakes, better windshield wipers, improved stability systems, and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Infiniti is also planning to add the 3.7-liter V6 to the overseas 2009 FX, which is more powerful than the 3.5-liter engine we'll receive Stateside. With no four-cylinder or diesel models planned until 2010, Infiniti will still be playing catch-up with its European competitors for the near-term.

The reason for the many improvements is that Infiniti is facing an up-hill battle to woo luxury customers away from very entrenched Euro brands like Mercedes and BMW. That's all well and good, but why not just make most of these improvements in the US market as well? Infiniti is a very good luxury brand, but it's getting its butt kicked in sales by the likes of Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, and Cadillac. We like fancy knobs and seven speed automatics, too.

I wonder what, in europe, warrants the smaller engines (diesels), and bigger brakes?
